month as part of a two-man
show in Traverse City.
Art in the Park continues to
earn more money each year
for Common Ground. Its ear-
nings reached $40,000 last
year, a dramatic increase
from 5 years ago. "Many ar-
tists who don't normally do
fairs, will enter this fair
because of the its quality and
because they sell a lot of their
work," says Nancy Clark,
chairman of the artists'
committee.
Clark, originally with the
Carol Hooberman gallery in
Birmingham, has worked on
the fair for the past eight
years. "The committee has
worked hard to make the fair
better each year, getting feed-
back from the artists, and it
has gained a great reputation
with artists throughout the
country," says Clark. When
comparing Ann Arbor's fair
with Art in the Park, Clark -
replied,. "The difference is the
parking, the heat, the crowds,
a shorter drive and you just
don't get so confused."
Art in the Park also
features a children's art area,
where children of all ages can
create art of their own, have
a button made or have their
faces painted. In addition,
special exhibit of work done
by student artists from the
Pontiac School District's
Vocare Special Education Pro-
gram will be showcased.
Sweatshirts designed this
year for Art in the Park by
Michigan sculptural
ceramicist Jerry Berta will be
sold. They are second in a
series of artist-designed
sweatshirts, with the pro-
ceeds to benefit Common
Ground. -

Food from some of the area's
vendors and a raffle which in-
cludes a VCR, color TV,
microwave, symphony tickets
and musical entertainment
round out the two-day event.
Entertainment chairman
Sue Friedman has worked on
the entertainment committee
for four years. Friedman, a
teacher, says "The artists are
incredibly friendly; it's very
much a family atmosphere.
The park treats the artists
well, and the artists treat the
park well in return. "I always
wanted to be involved with
art, and donating time to Art
in the Park is like donating
time to Common Ground."
The tradition of serving
breakfast for the artists on
Saturday monring, which
started six years ago, will con-
tinue. Local restaurants
donate the food which is set
up in the center of the park.
Members from this year's
artists' committee include:
Nancy Clark, Elda Schwartz,

from four contemporary furniture
artists.
