Murray left the world of stand-up comedy in 1950 when he starred in his first coast-to-coast radio and TV show called "Song for Sale!' This began 14 uninterrupted years on TV where he created, produced, starred in and packaged a series of audience- participation programs such as "Dollar A Second," "Treasure Hunt" and "Charge Account!" Along the way, he earned the nickname of "King of Anecdotes!' And his storytell- ing abilities have made him a constant guest on leading talk shows. Never content to stagnate, he also studied ac- ting and has appeared in numerous movie and TV films. Two years ago, Murray was interviewed by ABC for part of a documntary on D-Day, 1944. The memories of that event will stay with him forever. "As a member of the USO, we were the first to land on Omaha Beach," Murray remembers. The "we" in this case included a girl singer, a magician, a dance team and an accordianist. "We were put on boats and off to France we went!' - The journey„ however, was anything but relaxing. "There were bumper-to-bumper boats heading across the English channel and mines everywhere. Boats exploded just ahead of us?' The landing was anything but glamorous as well. "We thought we'd be the vanguard; that they'd have a ticker tape parade waiting for us. Instead, they didn't even know we were coming. We landed alone in the pouring rain, mud up to our ankles, not knowing where to go or what to do. I remember the cold, the gas masks, the fox holes, the bom- bing every night!' Still, he says, he wouldn't change a thing. "Imagine witnessing this hunk. of history," he sighs. "It was weird, exciting, exhilerating. Almost awe-inspiring. All of a sudden, there I was. And all because I knew a few jokes!" After such a diverse 50 years in show business, does Murray think much about the future? "Not much," he answers quickly. "I never dreamt of `stardom: I never dreamt of living in a big house, driving a big car, having people ask me for my autograph. It's fun- ny, but the kinds of things that bothered me early in my career still do today. I used to worry about where I was go- ing to open next Tuesday. Fif- ty years later, I find myself still worrying about the same thing. I guess people don't ever really change!' ❑ Music Study Club Announces Soloists Soloists have been announc- ed for the Annual Artists Concert of Music Study Club of Metropolitan.
