"That way, if you're scheduled to rim at midnight, you will have some company part of the way," says Michaelson, who also has run two ultramarathons (50-milers) and one 100-kilometer (62-mile) run. Each five-man team will live together aboard a convoy of donated Winnebagos, he says. Michaelson met Andrew Mecca, a Los Angeles cultural anthropologist who is ADAPT's founder and the relay race coordinator, on a cruise ship last summer. Each noticed the other's t-shirt — Mecca was wearing an Iron- man Triathalon shirt, Michaelson a Boston Marathon shirt — and the en- suing conversations led Mec- ca to invite Michaelson to participate. "With my experience, he knew he'd be able to count on me. If my turn comes up at 2 a.m. in the Rockies, he know I'll hold up my end," Michaelson says. To prepare, the endodontist has been run- ning 15 miles six mornings a week and one 20-plus-miler. "I've trained very hard for this. I want to be in the best shape possible," says Michaelson, an Adat Shalom Synagogue member and father of two children. "I'm going to be one of the `college kids' out there," says Michaelson. Many team members are masters ultramarathoners like Mecca. After the Transcontinental, Michaelson says he'd like to try the Ironman, a running- biking-swimming competi- tion held in Hawaii each year. "It's the only thing I haven't done," he says. 0 Table Tennis Clinic To Feature Champ Dan Seemiller, U.S. na- tional men's table tennis coach and five-time U.S. champion, will conduct a two- day clinic on the sport at the Maple/Drake Jewish Com- munity Center Sept. 23-24.
