The data bank questions in-
chide demographic informa-
tion, income, age, household
composition, migration pat-
terns and intermarriage.
An exact census of the
Jewish community and the
Jewish education of the
respondents are examples of
questions downgraded in im-
portance by Ukeles. "This is
interesting" he says, "but
will it help the community
make better decisions?
"Sometimes we have to
resist our own curiosity. We
had to meet with community
leaders and ask them, 'What
are the important policy
choices the Detroit communi-
ty must make in the next
three-to-five years?' "
Based on those discussions
and the focus groups, the four
major areas of the Detroit
study will be:
• Jewish identity.
• Mobility
and
neighborhood change.
• Philanthropy and the
Allied Jewish Campaign.
• Service needs.
Because of that kind of in-
put and the emphasis on
Detroit concerns, "this is not
just another study or a cookie-
cutter," says Ukeles. "We
want to leave the community
with decision-making capaci-
ty — a computer-based infor
mation system. We are going
to build the capacity to make
community decisions.
"This is going to be the
Cadillac of Jewish population
studies — or the Lincoln if
you prefer." ❑
