O
"Auschwitz is the least ho-
ly place on earth," he said. "It
is a parcel of profanity . . . It
deserves fire and ice, and the
silent curses of all men . . . .
The competition for
Auschwitz is spiritually
damaging. The Geneva agree-
ment must be honored. And
then there must be no chur-
ches, no synagogues, nothing
gentle and godly on this foul
ground. Auschwitz must be
left alone."

Bill Buckley's
Convolutions
The most convoluted
response to- the convent
debate — and the one most
chauvinistic to a Catholic —
came from syndicated colum-
nist • William Buckley.
Catholic Poles, he claimed,
should never have agreed to
remove the convent from the
death camp. Instead, they
should have "quietly" an-
nounced "that under no cir-
cumstances would they stand
in the way of a few nuns from
a Catholic order who had
decided to devote the rest of
their lives to praying for the
souls of all who had died at
Auschwitz . . . "
But having committed
themselves to moving the
nuns, said Buckley, Polish
Catholic leaders should have
done just that. As for Jews'
fury that the nuns at
Auschwitz were praying for
the conversion of Jews, as well
as for the souls of those who
had been slain at the camp,
Buckley asserted that "the
subtlest form of anti-
Semitism is to act as if it were
not worth it to pray for the
conversion of Jews to Chris-
tianity .. , . Christians are
enjoined to spread what they
believe to be the special joys
of their faith worldwide, and
a mark of disrespect for other
religions is any failure to ex-
pose them to what one is com-
mitted to believing to be the
word of the Lord. And, of
course, as much can be said —
must be said, with respect to
the Jewish religion, as well as
Islam, Hinduism and others!'
Is Convent
A Diversion?
After so much newsprint
was devoted to all these com-
ments and indignities, a uni-
que worry came in the
Jerusalem Post from Shlomo
Avineri, a former director-
general of Israel's Foreign
Ministry.
Avineri was concerned that
the convent issue and such
controversies as Kurt
Waldheim divert attention
from the Germans' ultimate
responsibility for the
Holocaust.
