Midrasha Plans
Lecture Series
The Midrasha-College of
Jewish Studies, a division of
the Agency for Jewish Educa-
tion, is offering a series of lec-
tures titled, "Sundays at the
Midrasha — Torah Li'Shma:
Learning for the Sake of
Learning."
The first lecture will be
held 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 and
will feature Boaz Yemini, an
Israeli silversmith. His topic
will be, "Art at the Midrasha:
Three Generations of the
Making of Jewish Ceremonial
Objects."
Subsequent lecturers in-
clude Itamar Rabinovich of
the Dayan Center, Aviv
University, who will speak on
"Labor, Likud and the PLO
Initiative" 7:30 p.m. Sept. 24;
Suzie Russek-Osherov, Israeli
poet, artist and historian who
will discuss "Ibuching the
Past: Personal Impressions of
a Polish Journey" 7:30 p.m.
Oct. 29; and Dr. Jacqueline
Zeff, dean, division of arts and
sciences at Mercy College,
who will speak on "Prophets
and Profits — What Gives?
American Experiences of
Philanthropy" 7:30 p.m. Nov.
19.

will be a special guest at the
Jewish Welfare Federation
annual meeting and election
of officers on Sept. 26 at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
The 6:30 p.m. dinner
meeting will also feature an
overview by Dr. Conrad Giles,
concluding his three years as
president of Federation.
As the leader of Detroit's
Project Renewal sister city,
Baros has been instrumental
in strenghtening the ties bet-
ween the two communities to
bring progress to the area.
Award-Winning
Poet to Speak
The Jewish Students
Organization at Oakland
University will sponsor a
poetry reading and informal
discussion in English with
Yehuda Amichai, Israel's
foremost poet, at noon Mon-
day in Gold Room A, Oakland
Center, Oakland Univeristy.
Amichai has received all of
Israel's major literary awards,
including the Israel Prize for
Literature in 1982. His works
include poetry, plays, novels,
and short stories. He has
taught in Israel and the
United States, at New York
University and at the Univer-
sity of California at Berkeley.
He is originally from Ger-
many, served in the British
Army during world War II,
and in the Palmach of the
Haganah. He saw active du-
ty in Israel's War of In-
dependence and the Sinai
campaign.
Co-sponsors of his visit to
Oakland University are the
school of arts and sciences,
the honors college, the dept.
of English and the dept. of
modern languages and
literatures. The program is
free and open to the public.
Zedakah Club
Plans Fund-Raiser
The Zedakah Club will hold
its 56th annual donor event 8
p.m. Sept. 20, when guests
are invited to see "Driving
Miss Daisy" at the Birm-
ingham Theater.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning
"Driving Miss Daisy," written
by Alfred Uhry, tells the story
of the playright's Jewish
grandmother and her black
chauffeur.
Founded more than 60
years ago, the Zedakah Club
aids Jewish aged and in-
digent in the Detroit area.
The group now gives monthly
assistance to more than 35
families. Among the Zedakah
Club's projects are paying for
heat bills, buying clothing
and locating furniture.
The Zedakah Club was
started by a group of women
who met in their homes.

katzman are the Zedakah
Club's case supervisors.
There is a charge for the
Sept. 20 event. All money will
go toward Zedakah Club pro-

JCC To Show
Ethiopian Exhibit
Marriam Cramer Ring's
photographic exhibit, "Still
Trapped in Ethiopia" which
records the lives in Jewish
villages in Ethiopia will be on
display at the Jewish Com-
munity Council community
assembly Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
at the Maple/Drake Jewish
Community Center.
The exhibit shows four
villages where women,
children, elderly and ill Jews
who were still in Ethiopia
when Operation Moses ended
struggle to survive, and pray
to rejoin their families in
Israel.
