HARTZ Special to The Jewish News eshivath Beth Yehu- dah's board of direc- tors met with its ad- ministration Tuesday night, and according to both Fred Goldenberg, the teachers' negotiator, and Rabbi E.B. Freedman, Beth Yehudah's administrative director, con- tract talks may be completed as early as today. "The teachers were in school Tuesday and in the classrooms Wednesday for the first day of school, working under the old contract," Goldenberg said. "We're not too far apart. I expect that when we get back together toward the end of this week, we will come up with an ac- ceptable contract for both sides." The two sides agreed that, although there has been no contract settlement, the open- ing of school would not be in- terrupted. Freedman and Goldenberg said Wednesday morning, "School is starting, y Only $9850 only $12,795 Only $11,475 only 5 19,765 only 19,795 only $9995 Only $10,695 ii10tittiwit41 . Class also began this week at both Akiva Hebrew Day School (K-12) and Hillel Day School (K-8). Rabbi Zev Shimansky, headmaster at Akiva Hebrew Day School, a non-union institution where each teacher has his own con- tract, said classes ran smoothly Tuesday. Hillel Day School Principal Rochelle Iczkovitz also reported Wednesday's first day of school went "wonder- fully." Hillel teachers are in the second year of a two-year contract. According to Janet Pont, director of nursery school at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, the synagogue's Southfield and West Bloomfield nursery schools began this week with no problems. Hebrew school, under the direction of Rabbi C. Diamond, also began this week. Both nursery and Hebrew school teachers are working under a multi-year contract that expires at the end of August 1990.0 Detroiter Volunteers With JSC In Morocco MICHELLE COHEN Special to The Jewish News 9.9% 1600 miles, like new '88 EAGLE PREMIER ES 4 DR Negotiations, Classes Continue At Schools A young Detroiter will spend the next 10 months in Morocco as a Jewish Service Corps Volunteer for the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). Lesley Miller, 24, will work in the JDC-sponsored Home for the Aged in Casablanca where she will design and im- plement social projects. JDC, the overseas arm of the American Jewish com- munity, is celebrating its 75th year of service, sponsoring programs of relief, rescue, rehabilitation and Jewish education. JDC receives its funding from the United Jewish Appeal, which in turn gets support from campaigns in 639 American com- munities, including Detroit. "I think it's going to be a challenge," Miller said of her new volunteer position. "The people in the Casablanca home are well taken care of. The staff emphasizes a clean and healthy environment for the people. Of course this is important, but it's also impor- tant to keep the residents' minds and bodies busy through exercise and other activities. I want to get the residents active." One of Miller's ideas is to encourage the residents to begin cooking again. If the residents participate, Miller hopes to put together a cookbook. She also will help develop community social programs Lesley Miller will work In the JDC- sponsored Home for the Aged in Casablanca, for women, children and the poor. A graduate of Vassar Col- lege with a degree in history, Miller has traveled extensive- ly. Most recently, she spent five months working for the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) as a con- sultant in Tunisia. "I'm looking forward to the new challenges JDC is going to present to me and the social and cultural interac- tion I will devleop with the Moroccan Jewish communi- ty," Miller said. 0
