TELEGRAPH AT 12 MILE AND 1.696 SOUTHFIELD •

10 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1989

Judaism is based not only on
learning, but on doing (the
mitzvot). As it says in the
morning prayer, we beseech
God for wisdom to learn and
to teach, to keep and to do,
and "U'l'kayaim" - meaning,
to make endure, His Ibrah.
From this we learn that we
need not only the learning
and the transmitting
(teaching), but the observance
as well, to ensure the conti-
nuance of Yiddishkeit.
As Mr. Rosenblatt put it,
"We're talking about com-
mittment."

'Double-Talk' Article
Does. About-Face

After reading the excellent
editorials in The Jewish News
of Aug. 18 and 25 ("When
Will Washington Learn?" and
"The New PLO") and both
Alan Dershowitz's and Carl
Alpert's masterful analyses
and explanation of Israel's
policy on Palestinian
demands and the issues of
peace, I was stunned and
angered at finding the
abominable comparison of
Shamir and Arafat in "The
Double-Talk Twins" article
which was a reprinting from
Time magazine.
Time is known for its anti-
Israel, anti-Shamir/Likud
bias. It has very seldom
shown a balanced understan-
ding of Israel's problems in
her fight for survival and her
reactions to PLO terrorism.
Shamir certainly does not
trust Arafat and his hen-
chmen. He has been general-
ly honest about his convic-
tions and policies for peace in
the area both with his people
of Israel and in his dealings
with the Palestinians of the
West Bank and Gaza.
Arafat was not. The resolu-
tions of the recent Fatah Con-
gress in Tunis - Arafat is the
"maximum" leader and
spokesman of Fatah and the
PLO - voice a different
resolve and determination
than Arafat's words of ap-
peasement and explaining
away the terrorist acts
against Israel when he talks
to U.S. diplomats and to the
media.
Shamir speaks in une-
quivocal language on elec-
tions in Judea and Samaria,
and his last meeting with the
West Bank lawyer Thrift
showed his earnest attempt to
get the Palestinians of these
territories engaged in the pro-
cess of accepting the elec-
tions, limited autonomy, etc.
Your thoughtless editor
who included the Time com-
parison in the latest Jewish

News should have read the
letter which Gerald Shacter
wrote to Time (Aug. 28):
". . While Shamir is the
democratically elected Prime
Minister of a legitimate state,
Arafat is not the head of
government of any nation or
even the Palestinian people,
but Only the leader of a ter-
rorist group. By treating him
equally, you cloak him with a
legitimacy to which he is not
entitled."
The inclusion of the Time
column in The Jewish News
was a disservice to Israel's
struggle with Palestinian ter-
ror and those of the Jewish
community who support the
efforts of Israel's government,
headed by Shamir, who
search for a peaceful solution.

Prentis. Manor
Needs An Overhaul

The Prentis Manor Home
for the Jewish Aged needs a
general overhaul rather than
just a new location (Aug. 25).
It needs a competent mana-
ger, a good cook, more than
one physical therapist to han-
dle the group, and aides who
are really trained to give the
needed help.
I hope that when funds are
available, instead of
relocating, Prentis Manor
may become a place where ag-
ed Jews may get the care they
hope for and should have; a
place Jews can really be
proud of .. .
Meyer Prentis was a philan-
thropist, a fine man! He
would not be proud of the way
the place named for him
operates .. .
