THE ORIGINAL HAPPY HOURS MON:FRI. 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. ap. , IN OUR NIKO'S LOUNGE -- • complishments of his father, Shirley, a prominent sports columnist in Washington, D.C., and sister Lynn, who serves as a senior editor with Newsweek magazine. And then, of course, there's Povich's globe-trotting wife, Connie Chung, whose nose for news netted a slot with CBS's reformatted "West . 57th Street," which, network of- ficials hope, will turn the news magazine into a winner. While he has taken his turn as hard-news reporter with stations in Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco as well as Washington in an award-winning career span- ning some 20 years, Povich admits that his personality didn't always travel that well. "One of the reasons I've bounced around," says Povich, "is that I fought every battle [with bosses] as if it were Ar- mageddon. That and age have taught me to go easier on myself?' He has fought battles from an early age. Raised in an Or- thodox Jewish home, Povich remembers feeling the heat of anti-Semitism even as a youngster. "My father's job was in a non-Jewish at- mosphere, which I was expos- ed to. Because of our family's high priority on education, I was sent to prep school where, as it turned out, there was only a handful of Jews. "I would have my Jewish friends from cheder and then there were my pre-school friends — who were WASPs." He was able to shake off the sting of anti-Semitism. "I felt some anti-Semitism from others at that time. It was subtle, but I always had the feeling that, somehow, I was different from the others" at prep school. The differences didn't bother him. "I thrived on it; I liked it?' Povich said. "I've always been proud of my heritage, and I'm thankful to my parents for exposing me to my Jewishness so much." Povich is proud of what he calls his program's ability to break stories before networks get hold of them. Such was the case, • he recalls, with a story on a hospital's reported mistaken baby swap, when two coules in Pennsylvania and Florida last year discovered that they may have been given the wrong babies by a hospital years ago. The former bad boy of news is optimistic that there will be more good news to tell about "A Current Affair?' We are moving in the direction of '60 Minutes? " says Povich. "Now that we've got your attention, we're going for your heart." ❑ Stga Aet,,,,•• ■ st a 411i oSi orrrVi 00. 4 ,00, • • rs. arglio t ■ ‘ Join Us For A Pleasant Surprise and Discover That THERE IS A DIFFERENCE!'
