luck. Eventually, I stumbled
upon what appeared to be a
synagogue, a building with
the Star of David on top of it.
When I returned for Friday
night services, I walked into
a meeting of the Masons of
Australia. It was a masonic
temple. For a number of the
masons there, I was the first
Jew they had ever met. We
talked a little bit about
religion, and that's how I
spent the High Holidays."
Gorenstein returned to
Detroit in January and acted
in several more productions
at the Bonstelle and Hilberry.
In July, he auditioned in
New York for the New Actors
Workshop.
"When I received word last
month that I had been
selected. I was shocked, but
very happy," he said.
For now, his college educa-
tion has been put on hold.
He hopes to get as much as
he can out of the two-year pro-
gram and then "hopefully do
some stage work in New York
and eventually wind up ac-
ting and directing in film."
This month, he will leave
his mother, Francine, and
younger brother, Scott, and
move to New York to pursue
his dream, bringing with him
eight-by-ten framed pictures
of Jimmy Stewart and Robert
DeNiro, several of his favorite
plays — and a suitcase full of
hats. ❑
