As a senior, he was elected president of Lathrup's thes- pian group. He started off the school year playing Jim, the gentleman caller in Ten- nessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie. "The part was quite a challenge for me because I didn't see myself in the role," Gorenstein said. "Jim is an ingenue-type character, and I usually play more of an everyman character." Lathrup took that produc- tion to forensic competition, vying at both the district and regional levels. Gorenstein received the best actor award for his performance at regionals. Menagerie, Following Gorenstein starred as Albert Peterson in Lathrup's 1986 spring musical, Bye Bye Birdie. "That production was a good deal because I received free dancing lessons," he said. "A choreographer came in and spent two to three hours a day after school for two months teaching me tap." A month before graduation, Gorenstein directed a Lathrup one-act play, Doing a Good One for the Red Man. His year was topped off with the Outstanding Senior Per- formance Award given to him by Lathrup's theater department. That fall, Gorenstein entered Wayne State Univeristy as a theater major. While a freshman, he per- formed in several productions at the Bonstelle and Hilberry Studio Theaters. The summer before his sophomore year at WSU, he was cast in his first profes- sional production at the Henry Ford Museum Dinner Theater, portraying the roles of Admiral and Pete in My Sister Eileen. As a sophomore, Gorenstein acted in Music Man, and nine small roles in The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Also that year, Gorenstein starred as Sim in Wild Oats at the Bonstelle Theater. "He definitely was my favorite role," Gorenstein said. "Sim was a simpleton. I think that I made a complete transformation, vocally, physically and mentally, becoming the character of Sim." Last September, Gorenstein and a friend moved to Australia. "My father had passed away a year earlier, and the rest of my family was rebuilding their lives. Things were pretty much getting reestablished at home, so I decided to take some time and travel a little bit to reasses my direction in terms of the future." traveled Gorenstein through Australia and New Zealand and worked at the Hard Rock Cafe in Sydney. He also took part in a television commercial that was filmed by the Sydney Department of Health for the prevention of AIDS. "I was in Cannes, Australia, during the High Holidays, and I wanted to at- tend services," Gorenstein said. "So, I began looking for a synagogue to spend the holidays at, but couldn't locate one. I went to the travel bureau and looked through the phone books but had no
