oS 604 The newest attraction at Disney World is the Disney- MGM Studios Theme Park, a new magical kingdom dedi- cated to the wonderful world of movies. Highlights of the park include a replica of Hol- lywood Boulevard, a "Back- stage Studio Tour," movie memorabilia, and the oppor- tunity to witness and par- ticipate in the filming of ac- tual movies and TV shows. Universal Studios Florida, Orlando: The whole family will enjoy Florida's newest theme park. Universal Studios Florida, opening in May 1990, is a spectacular backlot featuring entertainment attractions based on the most popular motion pictures ever produc- ed. More than 50 actual mo- tion picture and television sets, 40 restaurants, and 30 shops and boutiques will be open to the public. Visitors to the park will be able to put themselves in the middle of some of their favor- ite movies, including "Back to the Future" and "E.T." The park will also feature live- action entertainment ranging from a "Ghostbusters" show to a "Big One" California earthquake simulation. Visitors will see actual movies and television shows being filmed, and will literal- ly have hands-on experience with the art and magic of movie-making. The attraction is located within five minutes of 13,500 hotel rooms. Altogether, more than 64,000 rooms are within a 30-minute drive of Univer- sal Studios Florida, near the intersection of Interstate 4 and the Florida Turnpike, 10 miles southwest of downtown Orlando. USAir has been des- ignated the offical air carrier of the park, and Hertz is the official rental car. California: San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego — one or two or all — continue to be extremely popular domestic destinations. San Francisco offers cable car rides, a boat tour of the bay and an underside view of the Golden Gate Bridge, shop- ping at Fisherman's Wharf, the touchy-feely Ex- ploratorium science museum, the mystery of Alcatraz and the legend of its famous "Birdman," and those incredi- ble hills that will wear out even the most energetic kids by the end of the day. Artsy Sausalito, Marin County and the redwoods at Muir Woods National Monument are good day trips. The appeal of the Los Angeles area includes an in- side look at movie-making at Universal Studios, "star" gaz- ing tours of celebrities' homes, stepping in famous footsteps outside Mann's (Grauman's) Chinese Theater, window shopping at the chichi shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, and partak- ing of superfunky Venice (the kids will love the roller skating). Nearby, there's Orange County, with Knott's Berry Farm (check out the replica of Independence Hall at the entrance), Lion Coun- try Safari, and, of course, that original brainstorm, Disney- land. In San Diego, there's the wonderful zoo, as well as Sea World, which will bore only the most snooty adult. A day trip to Mexico is a nice change of pace. The California Parlor Car 'Iburs are popular bus tours in and around the state, includ- ing The Pacific Coast and Hearst Castle (three days); Orlando's newest theme park, Universal Studios Florida, will open in May 1990. Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Coast and Hearst Castle (six days); San Diego Experience (one or three days); and others. Several of the Parlor Car Tours connect San Francisco with Los Angeles, which beats driving that treacher- ous oceanside route with a carful of antsy kids. Williamsburg, Virginia: The Colonial Williamsburg restoration is one of the best places in America to assimi- late history painlessly. This was a hotly political town, in which Patrick Henry deliv- ered his famous Stamp Act speech ("If this be treason, make the most of it") where the Second Continental Cong- ress was boldly instructed by Virginia to propose indepen- dence, and where George Mason's Declaration of Rights, which became the basis for the first 10 amend- ments to the Constitution, were adopted. You can get a feel for that period of time by strolling Williamsburg's streets, visit- ing restored buildings that are often manned by people in period costumes, and watch- ing Colonial activities such as firearms demonstrations and gathering on the green, etc. A variety of escorted tours, in- cluding several designed for children, are available. The kids will put up with historic Colonial Williams- burg if you promise to spend time at Busch Gardens, "The Old Country." Busch Gardens is an elaborate theme park featuring "Oktoberfest," plus a recreated German Village, and English, French, Italian and Scottish villages. Each area has rides, shows, live entertainment and res- taurants. Transportation around the grounds is by monorail, sky lift, paddle- boats or steam train. There are also animal acts, musical review and magic shows, ar- cades, an antique carousel and lots of "screamer" rides, including the Loch Ness Mon- ster, which separates the men from those of us with weak stomachs. Boscobel Beach, Ocho Rios, Jamaica: This resort is geared for families and caters to the needs of both children and adults. Operating with the philosophy that a family who plays together, stays together, Boscobel Beach pro- vides together time for a family, but also provides supervised activities for children at the Mini Club, supervised by staff "Super- nannies." Youngsters can dine with their parents or eat with new friends at a different time. Parents, on the other hand, can relax on the beach located on a private cove, or indulge in a wide range of water-re- lated activities, day trips or nightlife. 'Activities include tennis, water polo, water ski- ing, wind surfing, sailing, volleyball, a fully equipped gym, snorkeling, scuba, bicy- cles, pool, Jacuzzi, aerobics, golf, indoor games room, pedal boats, disco and piano bar. Even the accommodations support this balance of togetherness and separate times. Junior suites comes with a king-sized bed area, a sunken living area and a ter- race that overlooks the gardens and sea. The queen- sized sofa in the living area turns into the kids' bed. Children under 14 who share your room come for free. The price for a Boscobel Beach vacation includes ac- commodations, three meals daily including table wine with lunch and dinner, all bar drinks and cigarettes, par- ticipation in live entertain- ment and events, excursions (including Dunn's River Falls, shopping trip to Ocho Rios and Plantations tour) and use of all sports equipment and facilities (with services of instructors). The Mini Club is also in- cluded and covers a computer workshop, scuba lessons, a movie theater, activities, a mini-zoo bicycles, disco, video games, pony rides, picnics, arts and crafts and Supernan- nies. • Free Delivery • Senior Citizen Discount • Convalescent Aids • Accept Utility Payments ORCHARD MALL NEW ORLEANS MALL MUIRWOOD MALL w, 10 MILE RD.
