Lesbian Fights To Be In Army Milwaukee (JTA) — A Milwaukee Jew and one-time U.S. Army Reserve drill sergeant, is contesting a federal appeals court decision upholding the army's refusal to employ her because she is an acknowledged lesbian. Her attorney said Miriam Ben-Shalom would apply for a rehearing before all the ac- tive judges in the seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago. A three judge panel from the circuit had ruled against her. Ben-Shalom enlisted in the Reserve in 1974, but was discharged in 1976 when she revealed that she was a les- bian. Her litigation resulted in a court order for her reinstatement in 1987, and she tried to re-enlist year. The Army refused her. • 1
