NEWS) Bigotry Flares Over Temple Atlanta — The Atlanta chapter of the American Jewish Committee has joined with Methodist, Catholic, Baptist, Episcopal and Presbyterian leaders in con- demning anti-Semitic sen- timents surrounding the pro- posed construction of a new synagogue in a suburban Atlanta community. Several residents of Gwin- net County, Ga., spoke out at a meeting of the Municipal County Planning Commis- sion to protest a zoning change that would allow the building of Temple Beth David, the county's first synagogue. One of several residents who opposed the change stated that the temple would bring "strange people" into the predominantly Christian neighborhood and might lead to violence. Israeli Hotelier Now Bankrupt Tel Aviv — The business career of Haim Shiff, who once owned the largest hotel chain in Israel, appears to be over as the controversial, 64-year-old entrepreneur has been declared bankrupt by the Aviv District court. The bankruptcy order forbids the former chairman of the national hotel association from engaging in any finan- cial transactions, including the use of a checkbook or bank credit card. An early member of the Herat party, Shiff was fre- quently in the news because of his disputes with a variety of authorities and with business rivals. He outraged the Jerusalem Rabbinate in 1963 by building the city's first hotel with a coed' swim- ming pool. Rabbis Write AIDS Booklet New York — The Coalition for the.
