published in scholarly
periodicals and are footnoted.
But that was in 1937. Weyer
said, "these two men died
long before the Pioneer Fund
undertook its present grant
programs." What has the
Pioneer Fund been doing in
the past few decades? A 1977
New York Times article about
the fund "Fund Backs Con-
troversial Study of 'Racial
Betterment' " began, "A
private trust fund has for
more than 20 years supported
research by a dozen scientists
who believe that blacks are
genetically less intelligent
than whites."
That the interest of the
Pioneer Fund is ideological
rather than scholarly was
clearly indicated in a number
of grants made in the '70s and
'80s. For example, the Pioneer
Fund supported the Interna-
tional Association for the Ad-
vancement of Ethology and
Eugenics (IAAEE). The
secretary of IAAEE was
Donald Swan, who also super-
vised a Pioneer-supported
research project to test "An-
glo-Saxon" school children in
Hattiesburg, Miss. Swan, a
longtime activist in the
eugenics movement, was ar-
rested in 1966 for mail fraud.
Authorities found Nazi
paraphernalia, swastika
flags, an arsenal of weapons,
pictures of Swan with
members of George Lincoln
Rockwell's American Nazi
Party, and hundreds of anti-
Semitic, anti-Negro and anti-
Catholic pamphlets in his
home.
The Pioneer Fund also sup-
ported William Shockley, the
notorious Nobel Prize winner
who admitted to Playboy
magazine that he had ap-
peared prominently in the
virulently anti-Semitic
Thunderbolt. Shockley has
proposed a sterilization pro-
gram for black Americans as
the only way to solve their
social and economic problems.
But most revealinig of the
agenda of the Pioneer Fund
has been the fund's support of
Roger Pearson, the leading
fascist ideologist of the post
war period. Pearson has spent
much of his career advancing
the theory that the white race
is endangered by inferior
genetic stock. He organized a
post war neo-Nazi group call-
ed the Northern League.
Pearson was described by
the anti-Semitic Right
magazine as a man "held in
renown by White nationalists
the world over." 0
