I OBITUARIES "Freiheit" Editor Dies At 97 p 5. aul Novick, described as the last of the great immigrant Marxist intellectuals, a leader among Jewish secularists and a representative voice of the Jewish Left, died Monday of a massive heart attack. He was 97. For over 66 years, Novick, as cofounder and editor in chief, had been the spirit behind the Morning Freiheit (Freedom), one of the few re- maining Yiddish newspapers in America until it folded last September. Born in Brest-Litovsk in 1891, Novick began his jour- nalistic career in 1915 in New York, working for the Jewish Socialist Naye Welt. In 1920, Novick Joined the Forward and in April 1922 co-founded the Freiheit with Moissaye Olgin. There were then five daily Yiddish newspapers in circulation. Three weeks shy of his 98th birthday, Novick was a witness as well as a partici- pant to our century's tumultuous political history. "He should have written down his memoirs," said Shirley Novick, his wife of 32 years, "because he himself was part of history." The funeral was to take place last Friday in New York. He also was an avid bridge player and a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Mr. Schiffman is survived by his daughter and son-in- law, Penny and Richard Courey of Farmington Hills; and a brother, Myron of Southfield. Miriam "Mashka" Stein, named woman of the year in 1981 by the David Horodoker Women's Organization, died Aug. 26. She was 89. Mrs. Stein, of Oak Park, was born in Poland. She spent most of her life in Michigan with her husband, Morris, where they raised three daughters. Mrs. Stein is survived by her husband, Morris; daughters and sons-in-law, Judy Vikser, Beverly and Frank Blas of West Bloom- field and Elaine and Paul Richman of N. Miami, Fla.; a sister, Meryl Levenson of Israel; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Leo Schiffman Leo Schiffman, who receiv- ed a Purple Heart after being wounded in World War I, died Aug. 25. He was 88. Werner, a charter member of the Holocaust Memorial Center who was a member of the Labor Zionist Organization and the Zionist Organization of America, died Aug. 27. He was 62. Mr. Werner, of West Bloom- field, was a general insurance agent. He was an avid reader who also enjoyed jogging, walking and playing tennis. He was a member of the Detroit Tennis Club, the Jewish Community Center and Adat Shalom Synagogue. Mr. Werner served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Doris; a son, Dr. Mark of Pon- tiac and a son and daughter- in-law, Daniel and Sheryl of West Bloomfield; a daughter, Minda Parrish of Saratoga, Calif.; a brother and sister-in- law, David and Dorothy of Chicago; and three grandchildren. Louis Stone Miriam Stein SAY IT WITH TREES Louis "Snitz" Stone, whose family was one of the founders of Eastern Market, died Aug. 25. He was 78. Mr. Stone lived in Detroit for 67 years. When he retired from his career as a manufac- turer's representative for the houseware industry, Mr. Stone moved to Boca Raton, Fla. He was a 33rd Degree Mason, a Shriner, a member of B'nai B'rith in Detroit and Boca Raton, and a former president of the Michigan Houseware Association. He also was a World War II veteran. Mr. Stone is survived by his wife, Shirley; a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Lynda Glasser of Farmington Hills; a son, Dr. James Mayer of San Francisco; two daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Dr. Gary Burnstein of West Bloomfield and Carolyn and Robert Bortman of Farmington Hills; a sister, Molly Segall of Florida and a sister and brother-in-law, Idabelle and Theodore Levy of Florida; and seven grandchildren. 11111---111 CLASSIFIEDS GET RESULTS!
