Milwaukee (JTA) — To
many Israelis, genuine draft
used to mean conscription in
the military.
As of June, it also signifies
a tall, cold one. Miller Brew-
ing Co., the Milwaukee-based
international beermaker, has
introduced its Miller Genuine
Draft premium beer to an
Israeli market dominated by
the domestic Maccabbee Beer.
Genuine Draft is doing
well, according to Elizabeth
Conlisk, public relations
manager for Miller Brewing.
She said the first shipment is
sold out, but declined to say
how large it was.
Tabori Enterprises of Israel,
a beverage manufacturer and
distributor, is the U.S. com-
pany's representative there.
Tabori is distributing 12 oz.
bottles and cans of Genuine
Draft to package stores,
supermarkets and tourist
hotels, Conlisk said. Kegs for
taverns may follow.
In a counter-move that
seems only coincidental, Mac-
cabbee has begun exporting
to the United States its brand
of kosher beer in hopes of
making a dent in the ex-
clusive import beer market.
Matt Cohen, managing
director of Tempo Beer In-
dustries, • LTD., the Israeli
brewer and importer, said the
company is prepared to spend
as much as $4 million to pro-
mote the Hebrew brew.

Most of that money will go
for televison commercials,
like the provocative spots be-
ing aired exclusively on the
David Letterman show.

Unemployment
At 9.5 Percent

With 150,000 Israelis out of
work, the country's
unemployment rate stands at
9.5 percent, compared with 6
percent a year ago, according
to figures released by the
Central Bureau of Statistics
on Wednesday.
The number of unemployed
has increased by 10,000 since
the first quarter of the year,
while the jobless rate rose a
full point in three months, up
from 8.5 percent in the second
quarter.
This means that one of
every 10 Israelis over age 15
is unemployed. For men it is
one of of 12. For women, one
out of nine.
