I SINGLE LIFE

Kushelowitz decided to take
out an ad about meeting
singles via the fax. It ran just
before Valentine's Day in a
New York magazine.
Next, he rented a fax
machine and put it in the
basement of the home he
shares with his mother. He
was ready to receive requests
from men and women seeking
love, or maybe just
infaxuation.
And they came —
stampeding fax in the hun-
dreds. Kushelowitz says one
woman faxed a description of
herself written in dictionary
form; another sent a
crossword puzzle with infor-
mation about her in the ver-
tical words, while the horizon-
tal words offered a sketch of
her ideal mate.
Several men from Australia
faxed their request for two
women to accompany them
for topless sunbathing in
Spain. A 38-year-old Jewish
man said he was willing to
pay for his dates to come meet
him in Switzerland.
SinglesFax also attracted
the attention of newspapers
and television stations.
Kushelowitz remembers
when reporters from a New
York TV station came to the
SinglesFax office.
"They referred to it as
`Barry's cluttered base=
ment: " he says. "It was pret-
ty embarrassing."
While Kushelowitz admits
his first thoughts were for
himself — "I wanted to send
my name to every woman
who joined" — he's making
SinglesFax into a family
affair.
"I've got two brothers, one
in New York and one in San
Diego," he says. "My brother
in New York is looking for a
nice, Jewish girl.
"Now he's a handsome guy,
and he knows how hard it is
to meet women. He had six
dates and every one stood him
up. Well, one showed up, but
in the middle of the date she
said she had to go to the
bank. She never came back."
Soon, he hopes to find a
date for his mother, a widow.
"But it would have to be
somebody extraordinary," he
says.
Until he finds true fax love,
Kushelowitz will be spending
his evenings and weekends as
the sole employee of
SinglesFax. The number is
(718) 275-2651.
And if, on one of those cold,
lonely evenings in his base-
ment, Kushelowitz happens
to come across his dream girl,
he's already got plans for a
fax-inating evening.
He would take her on a boat
ride, show her around
Manhattan and take her for

coffee at a cozy cafe. The date
might include a helicopter
ride and drinks at the top of
the World Trade Center.
"It's a great way to meet
people even if all you want to
do is make friends,"
Kushelowitz says of
SinglesFax. "A lot of people
don't even do it for romantic
reasons; they do it to make
pen pals. Not everyone is as
desperate as I am." ❑
