LABOR DAY SPECIALS OSI Inquiry Eyed Conductor Washington (JTA) — The U.S. Justice Department's Of- fice of Special Investigations was conducting an inquiry in- to Herbert von Karajan's war- time activities in the Nazi Party, when the world-famous conductor died last month, OSI officials have confirmed. Von Karajan, who died Ju- ly 16 at the age of 81, was a member of the Nazi Party during the Third Reich. Elan Steinberg, executive vice president of the World Jewish Congress, said that OSI was "absolutely correct in looking at" the case. He pointed out that von Karajan had "lied about his Nazi past," specifically about the time he served as a member of the Nazi Party. WJC brought information to OSI's attention within the past year on von Karajan, but it is unclear whether that material prompted OSI's investigation. Since von Karajan was an Austrian citizen, it was not possible for OSI to strip him of citizenship or deport him. But if the investigation had found he was linked to Nazi war crimes, he could have been placed on the Justice Department "watch list" bar- ring certain foreigners from entering the United States. German Youths Restore Graves Bonn (JTA) — Two to three dozen students from the high school in the West German town of Moenchengladbach for weeks have been cleaning, repairing and otherwise restoring the old Jewish cemetery on Huegel Street. They were preparing it for former Jewish residents of the town, now scattered all over the world, who returned, at the invitation of the town council, for a week-long visit that began last week. The youngsters, none of them Jewish, spent most of their free time at the cemetery. It took nearly six hours to repaint the epitaph of a single grave stone. At times, extensive con- sultation of documents and sessions with experts were necessary to decipher what years of erosion, neglect and vandalism nearly destroyed. "This is the least we can do for these people," said Sabine Rack, referring to the Jewish visitors. "We cannot undo what has been done. But we certainly want to let them know that we care. It is both a duty and an honor." MEMBER MARKETS OF THE DETROIT AREA KOSHER RETAIL MEAT DEALERS ASSOCIATION SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3rd THROUGH THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7th EMPIRE TURKEY BURGERS . . $ 2.09 11).
