preference and their need for
a synagogue affiliation. The
article provided a basis for
discussion and personal
introspection.
Thank you for permitting
your readers an opportunity
to get more than updates on
Israel and "fluff" from your
pages. I don't believe we can
afford to turn our backs on
any individual who wants to
identify with his/her
historical and religious com-
munity. Ignorance is not bliss.
Who are we to judge?
355-1000
In an otherwise very flatter-
ing piece you ran on me ("The
Door to the Secret" Aug. 11),
there were some unfortunate
lines that mistakenly para-
phrased some of my thoughts
on the issue of being an
Israeli Palestinian. Since this
is, to my mind, the most
crucial issue that the State of
Israel will have to face in the
morning after the settling of
the Palestinian problem in
the West Bank and the Gaza
Strip, and for the sake of
those readers who might have
wondered what I meant, I
wish herein to set the record
straight.
"Shammas wants an Israeli
passport," Elizabeth Apple-
baum wrote. "He will serve in
the army. He would take an
oath to support Israel if
everyone else — including
Jews living there — do the
same."
Well, for one thing, I do
carry an Israeli passport; it
says on its first page: "Israeli
citizenship." However,
nowhere does it specify my
nationality, the way an
American passport — if you
care to have a look at it now
— does. What I said to Ms.
Applebaum, who got me right
on the rest, was that all I am
asking from the state of
Israel, as an Israeli Palesti-
nian, is what every
American-Jew has on his
passport, namely a definition
of his . nationality. Which
would mean, of course,
"Israeli" in my case.
The problem is that there
are no Israelis in Israel. In
the rubric of "nationality" in
our identity cards it says
either Jewish or Arab. The
two words "Israeli nationali-
ty" are not mentioned in any,
repeat, any official document
of the State of Israel. There
are Jews (the majority) and
Arabs (the minority), but
there are no Israelis in Israel,
as there are Americans in the
U.S. and Canadians in
Canada.
Should the State of Israel
declare itself as the state of -
its citizens, the way the.
United States of America is,
then I am more than willing
to serve in its army and de-
fend it. A state that defines
itself, by law, as a Jewish
state, does not have a moral
leg to stand on and ask me, a
non-Jewish citizen, to serve in
its army, let alone take an
oath to support it.
I feel that American Jews,
in their ardent, understan-
dable and unreservedly
sincere support of Israel, are
not fully aware of the nature
of the state they are suppor-
ting; and, if they are, then
they tend to turn a blind eye
to its "minor shortcomings."
Myproblem is that they don't
have to face the music. They
live here as American na-
tionals, and I am the one who
is going back there to try and
cope with the self-referential
paradox: Could a Jewish state
be also democratic? I hate to
bring the bad news: NO.
Incidentially, (do I hear
somebody shouting: "I
wonder what life in Syria
would be like for you?"), I
happen to believe that all
Arab countries of the Middle
East rank among the worst
countries in the world, ex-
pecially as far as human
rights are concerned.
Thought you might be in-
terested to know.
Besides, it is beside the
point. Think about it.

Ukrainians
Worse Than SS
Re: "Ukrainian Concern:
Justice or Cover Up?" (July
28) — Patience Huntwork ad-
vocates changes in the pro-
cedures of the OSI, Office of
Special Investigations of Nazi
war criminals. She also states
that during the Nazi occupa-
tion of Russia, some Ukrai-
nians aligned themselves
with Hitler to fight Stalin.
Others refused and were im-
prisoned .. .
Nowhere in the article does
Ms. Huntwork mention the
numerous Ukrainians who
joined the dreaded SS com-
mands annihilating Jews.
As a survivor of concentra-
tion camp Krakow Plasgow in
Poland, I witnessed many
cases of cruelties and execu-
tions committed by the black-
uniformed Ukrainian guards.
The SS brutalities were
legendary, but the Ukrai-
nians' were much worse, as if
they tried to outmaster their
masters.
