the Kfar Hananiah and
Shikhin investigations as a
result of Kurinsky's survey of
glassmaking sites in Israel.
Traces of the sophisticated
furnaces required for produc-
ing glass were found on the
fields of 14 different
kibbutzim.
"Further research into this
may provide the proof that
glassware found throughout
the Roman Empire was im-
ported from this area and
that the Jews, far from being
a small cultist group, were a
nation which carried such
technologies into a largely
primitive western Diaspora,"
Kurinsky said.

Cultural Group
At Odds Again

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A
longstanding dispute bet-
ween the American and
Israeli direCtors of the
America-Israel Cultural
Foundation flared anew this
week as three Israeli
members of the board resign-
ed last week recriminations
on both sides.
The Israeli board members
who quit are Tommy Lapid
and Yitzhak Livni, both
former directors of the Israel
Broadcasting Authority, and
Judge Moshe Telgam.
Lapid charged that Amihud
Ben-Porat, an Israeli lawyer
who represents the founda-
tion's American component,
tried to alter the board by
electing an overwhelmingly
American slate. -
According to Lapid,
Americans sitting in New
York, who do not read
Hebrew, will be deciding who
gets grants for Israeli
literature.
The U.S.-based foundation,
headed by violinist Isaac
Stern in New York, raises
about $2 million annually to
support a variety of cultural
activities in Israel, and to
grant scholarships to promis-
ing young Israeli artists.
Sources close to the
American board rejected
Lapid's charge as "utter
nonsense," insisting that all
recommendations for alloca-
tions will still come from
Israelis.
The present dispute is a
reprise of the quarrel that
broke out three years ago bet-
ween the Israeli and
American directors.
