eff Roth is beefing
up his business.
The owner of the
Health Diet Beef company is
bringing what is believed to
be the first genetically
designed beef to the
metropolitan Detroit area.
Available for testing this
week at Fisher's Meat
Market in Birmingham, the
beef comes to Michigan from
a farm in Memphis, Tenn.,
Roth's hometown. He moved
to Michigan four years ago as
a consultant to the sun roof
business and joined former
neighbors Bob and Ruth
Meucci in the health beef
business a few years ago.
"People have been skep-
tical," Roth said. "But it's
real."
The beef, not yet on grocery
shelves, is limited in supply
and costs 70 percent more
than regular meats. Down the
road, Roth said, the company
may market a kosher health
beef.
Lab tests from the United
States Department of
Agriculture show .that the
genetically made product con-
tains at least two-thirds less

lb produce this specialty
beef, cows are cross-bred and
raised naturally. Fertilizers
and feed used on the farm
contain no chemicals and' the
cows are not treated with
antibiotics.
The product is the result of
years of testing by the Meuc-
cis, who run a cattle farm.
Roth's , involvement in the
business started from a
casual conversation with his
hometown friends about pro-
ducing a low fat, low calorie
and low cholestrol beef.
Roth is president and owner
of Health Diet Beef, which
will market the product
throughout the United States
during the next five years.
Plans also are under way to
test the product on the Euro-
pean community.
When it first becomes
available, within the next six
months, Health Diet Beef will
be on store shelves in small
specialty shops and in
restaurants. Down the road,
Roth hopes to bring the pro-
duct to larger grocery
stores. ED
