Many Deuteronomy pass-
ages have been inaugurated
into the prayer book liturgy.
The Shema is recited in every
worship service and is includ-
ed in the parchment of the
mezuzah. The theme of choos-
ing life over death with which
this sedra opens is used in the
Yom Kippur liturgy.
This sedra refers to the oft-
repeated theme that Israel is
a holy people and should
abolish all idolatrous prac-
tices of the heathen. Israel is
to be God's treasure, to
dedicate itself to service to
God as a true champion of
God's justice, with ritual
obligations of social and

ethical responsibilities to

and helpless: "the orphan,
the widow and the stranger
within thy gates."
Deuteronomy is written in
the spirit of the prophets,
with a unique style and
language characteristic of its
theme. Thus we see in this
sedra and throughout the
book of Deuteronomy the
broad spirit of the greatest
book of the Bible. Deuter-
onomy contains the founda-
tions of a profound legal
system for a just and humane
society, attributed to the
highest possible authority:
Moses. Cast in a unique
literary form of a farewell ad-
dress, it exhorts the love of
God and the love of one's
fellow man. It is a blend of
priestly and prophetic spirit.
The world owes much to
Deuteronomy, and especially
the Jewish people. El
