T
o Dr. James Brawer,
the Canadian $50 bill
in his pocket was spen-
ding power. To his young
daughter, the brightly colored
bill, with pink on the front
and an olive-green range of
mountains on the back, was a
beautiful picture.
Like his daughter, who
could see only the superficial
side, and not the real purpose,
of the money, human beings
view the world without
understanding its reality,
s id Dr. Brawer, professor of
neuroendocrinology at McGill
School of Medicine in Toron-
to. The guest of the Michigan
Chabad House, Dr. Brawer
spoke this week at the Bais
Chabad of Farmington Hills
on "Reality and Its Shadows."
Man often views the Torah
- as traffic laws, Dr. Brawer
said: A situation exists, and a
set of rules is needed to keep
order.
"In fact," he said, "the ex-
act opposite is true. The Torah

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM
FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 1989
is causual and the world is
derivative."
He gave as an example the
shape of the crystals that
form tooth enamel. For many
years, these were believed to
be in the shape of a hexagon.
Not long ago, a friend of Dr.
Brawer was walking outside
as the sun began to set. Glan-
cing to his right, he noticed a
shadow in a hexagonal shape
exactly like those of the
crystals. Then he looked to
his left, and saw the figure
creating the shadow; it was a
rectangle.
After numerous ex-
periments, the young man
realized that a rectangular
solid will always cast a
shadow of a two-dimensional
object. Thus, what scientists
saw when they studied
enamel was not hexagonal-
shaped crystals, but rec-
tangular crystals projecting
their shadows.
Man has an innate tenden-
cy to perceive only the
shadows and not the reality
behind them, Dr. Brawer said.
The world of shadows in
which human beings live is
the world of bills and car
repair and going to work each
morning, he said. The Hebrew
word describing this world is
makom, place; men, women
and children exist in a tangi-
ble place that is limited,
physical and restricted.
This contrasts directly with
God, who is boundless and
unlimited. The unpro-
nounceable name of God,
spelled in the Torah yud-hey-
vav-hey, when squared and
added up according to the
numerical value assigned
each letter in the Hebrew
alphabet, equals the
numerical value of the word
makom.
The relationship between
two such apparently incom-
parable words is that God can
be found everywhere, both in
the spiritual realm and the
physical world, he said. -
The physical world exists so
that man can understand the
metaphor of existence,
"which gives us the oppor-
tunity to grasp divinity," Dr.
Brawer said.
God uses the world much
the way an instructor uses a
