today, and in any future deci-

At the same time that Rab-
Yosef appeared in Jeru-
salem, Rabbi Eliazer Shach,
the venerable spiritual leader
of Israel's non-Chasidic Or-
thodox community, and the
guiding hand behind the
Degel Halbrah Party, which
has two members in the
Knesset, delivered an even
more dovish speech in the lel
Aviv suburb of Bnai Brak.
Speaking in Yiddish, Rabbi
Shach told his followers that,
"For the land of Israel there
must be a people of Israel ...
We must look at this subject
only from the standpoint of
pikuach nefesh. It is forbid-
den that a drop of blood
should be spilled over control
of land." The timing 'of the
two prominent rabbis, who
have cooperated closely in the
past, was hardly coincidental;
as Yakobson pointed out dry-
ly, both have telephones in
their homes.

The Yosef-Shach peace of-
fensive was greeted enthusi-
astically by the Israeli left,
which normally disapproves
of such rabbis, often described
as Ultra-Orthodox. MK
Avrum Berg, a Labor politi-
cian close to Shimon Peres,
termed Rabbi Yosef's speech,
"The most important
religious event of our genera-
tion."

Judging by their reaction,
Berg's right-wing colleagues
in the Knesset share his view
of its significance. "I accept
that Ovadia Yosef is a Ibrah
scholar," said MK Avner
Shaki of the National Reli-
gious Party. "But on the other
side, there are Ibrah lions
who think the exact opposite
on this issue." Secular hawks
were even more outspoken.
"Rabbi Yosef's opinion spills
the blood of the Land of
Israel," said nationalist MK
Geula Cohen.

Reaction to the Yosef-Shach
initiative has been especially
sharp in rabbinical circles.
Following Rabbi Yosef's
speech, three leading rabbis
cancelled scheduled appear-
ances at the conference in
protest. A few days later, the
National Religious Party's
Board of Rabbis, which
represents the majority of
Israel's practicing rabbis,
issued a formal opinion
contradicting Rabbi Yosef's
opinion.
