Wayne State University the welfare of the Russian transmigrants in its care," said Hassenfeld. "It will help us achieve one of our primary objectives: to give these Soviet emigres the knowledge and experience of their Judaism that they were entirely lack- ing while they were in the Soviet Union. "We are also emphasizing the centrality of Israel and providing the campers with an Israeli camp experience," she said. The camp is currently situated in a grassy corner of a public park in Ladispoli, not far from the beach. Organizers, however, say a new site may have to be found. Last week, for example, local police visited the camp and warned that the erection of a playhouse-type sukkah, made out of cloth, violated park regulations against erecting structures there. Led by the Israeli counselors along with volunteers from the Soviet transmigrants . themselves, the children begin the day by raising the flag and singing Hatikvah. Then they participate in a wide range of play, sports and arts and crafts activities. There is a daily Hebrew class, as well as instruction on Jewish and Israel-related topics and trips to a nearby lake for swimming. "Condi- tions are too dangerous to take them swimming in the sea," said one counselor. On Tuesdays, camp counselors said, fewer teenagers show up than other days. Tuesday is what the transmigrants have come to call "slave market" day, when local Italians come to a certain spot and pick out young peo- ple to work in their homes, or in their fields or quarries. Such work is illegal and pay is minimal, but young people jump at the opportunity to supplement the six dollars a day per person stipend given out by the JDC. ❑ Jewish Telegraphic Agency CENTER FOR JUDAIC STUDIES* presents AN INTRODUCTION TO JEWISH CIVILIZATION An Advanced Placement Course for High School Students Fall, 1989 Host TEMPLE BETH EL HIGH SCHOOL Temple Beth El High School 17400 Telegraph Rd., Birmingham — Scholarship Funds Available — Address all inquiries to Robert M. Federation Exec Is Killed In Holdup -TOM TUGEND Special to The Jewish News A prominent executive of the Jewish Federa- tion Council of Greater Los Angeles was kill- ed around midnight Monday by two holdup men as he was withdrawing some cash from an automatic teller machine at a West Los Angeles location. Jerry Weber, 49, the foun- ding executive director of the federation's Council on Jewish Life, died of multiple gunshot wounds at the UCLA hospital early Tuesday morn- ing. His wife, Sally, who was waiting in the couple's car during the robbery, was not injured. Los Angeles homicide detectives described the suspects as two black males, who fled in their car. The Council on Jewish Life, which Weber directed since its inception in 1979, serves as the federation's outreach arm to both non-traditional and established segments of the Jewish 'community. The council's six commissions deal with Israeli immigrants, intermarried couples and Jews with disabilities, as well as with synagogue relations, the arts, and spiritual concerns. Rabbi Harold Schulweis of Valley Beth Shalom, a Con- ROOT FOR THE UNDERDOG servative congregation in which the Webers have been extremely active, described the murdered man as "the shammes (caretaker) of the Jewish community and an ex- Hurt. alone. unwanted.
