preciated soldiers in the war
on Jewish ignorance. And for
their work they receive little
pay and less recognition. But
that is precisely my point.
Jewish education is being
undermined by the very com-
munity that lauds its values.
The organized Jewish world
praises Jewish education, but
who are its leaders and
honorees?
Yes, there have been at-
tempts to put greater em-
phasis on adult Jewish educa-
tion, family education and in-
formal Jewish education
(retreats, summer camp) — all
of which are non-classroom ef-
forts to instill Jewish values
into our youngsters in a
painless way. But until we
face reality and make some
hard decisions about a system
that isn't working, the
statistics will continue to
frighten us into undertaking
more surveys.
What we're afraid of is the
realization that Jewish
values must be transmitted
through tremendous effort in-
volving living each day in a
Jewish context rather than
just having them taught like
a course in history or math.
We're talking about commit-
ment, about following a for-
mula designed for us by the
ribrah — a frightening concept
in this age of secular
modernity.
After all, isn't it safer to
keep on taking surveys about
the Jewish condition and let
someone else worry about
where it all may end? ❑

Anti-Zionist
Group Returns

New York (JTA) — Rumored
to have been withered by the
winds of glasnost, the Soviet
Anti-Zionist Committee has
re-emerged with a vengeance.
Jewish groups in the
United States have denounc-
ed a recent statement by the
Jewish-led committee which
equated Zionism with racism
and claimed that Zionist ac-
tivity in the Soviet Union
could only lead to "anti-
Jewish sentiments in this
country."
In a joint statement, the
National Conference on
Soviet Jewry and the Con-
ference of Presidents of Major
American Jewish Organiza-
tions said they were "outrag-
ed" that the committee was
given a "media platform for
its vitriolic, anti-Zionist, anti-
Semitic rhetoric."
