liberate the entire land of
..Palestine . . . We will work
from all fronts and from any
place which allows us to reach
Palestine. When the condi-
tions are right, we will enter
Palestine by air. We will not
hesitate or relax." In the face
of repeated threats like this,
should Israel relax its guard
and compromise on strategic
defenses?
6. If Israel were to consent
to the creation of a Palestine
state with its own indepen-
dent government, located be-
tween Israel and the kingdom
of Jordan, it would defuse the
intifada, permit the Arabs to
play at statehood and restore
peace in the area." Is this a
serious argument? The situa-
tion in LeVanon gives us a
good idea of what would hap-
pen in the new young state. It
would become a battleground
of conflicting parties, sects,
militias and ambitious
leaders. The extremists,
knowing no scruples, would
eventually seize control. The
anarchy there would • create
what one political scientist
has called a "hot border,"
along which the violence
could not be contained. Given
a foothold this close to Israel,
several other Arab states,
which are openly preparing
for war with Israel, would'
grasp at this jumping-off
point.
7. "The Peace Now move-
ment, comprising Jews in
Israel and in the Diaspora,
constitutes a voice of corn-
promise and sanity." To the
contrary, Peace Now plays
directly into the hands of the
enemies. Leaflet 36 of the in-
tifada underground leader-
ship contains explicit praise
for positions taken by Peace
Now. It "salutes the position
of the Peace Now movement
and the democratic pro-
gressive forces in Israel, and
their recent campaign of
peace calls and slogans!' This
is a dubious endorsement.
Meir Uziel, a columnist in
Maariv, gloomily pointing out
the danger of a new dreadful
holocaust against Israel,
writes that this one will be
more dreadful in this respect:
"Jews will have collaboraed
and labored mightily and
danced to help bring it
about:'
8. "Who is attacking whom
in this part of the world?"
Arab-owned cars with blue or
white license plates issued in
Judea, Samaria and Gaza,
can travel the roads of Israel
without fear of rocks or
Molotov cocktails. When
Israeli cars, marked with
their distinctive yellow
plates, pass through Gaza or
Nablus, or along roads by

Arab villages, they are
targets for flaming bottles or
rocks which smash wind-
shields and windows. Ironic
note: once - again Jews are
marked out for violence by
yellow badges.

not hesitate to liken Israel's
acts against rioters to acts of
the Nazis against the Jews."
The comparison is an odious
one, but if one is drawing
parallels, Israel might be
little
to
likened
Czechoslovakia on the eve of
the Second World War. It was
faced with the problem of a
hostile German minority
within its borders, and a
mighty German force outside.
Czechoslovakia yielded to in-
ternational pressures and
gave up'disputed territory to
"peace-loving" Germany. The
rest is history.

simple and logical as you say,
why isn't the public, even the
Jewish public, told these
things?" Because some
newspapers and some colum-
nists and some editors think
they know better what the
public should be told, with
the result that the point of
view expressed above is not
always given a full hearing —
even in some of the Israel
press or some Jewish' papers
overseas. ❑

Bonn Sponsors

German Studies

Bonn (JTA) — The West
German government will
sponsor a center for German
studies at the Hebrew
University in Jerusalem, Ber-
nhard Doell of the Ministry of
Science and Research an-
nounced here.
He said it would be heavily
subsidized by the federal
government, which has in-
creased its budget for such
undertakings worldwide.
t,There has been a depart-
ment of German studies at
the Hebrew University for
more than 20 years. The new
center will include research
in the German language,
literature and German
history.
The Bonn government
sponsors similar centers in
London, Paris, Rome,
Florence and Washington.
Ten years ago, such an
undertaking in Israel would
have been unthinkable, for
historical and political
reasons.
But times have changed.
One indication is the success
of the German cultural center
in Tel Aviv, with a branch in
Jerusalem.
