varied political views,"says
Gelman. "Now, part of our
purpose is to represent all of
the community. I keep an
open mind."
Gelman believes the pre-
sent publication better
reflects the heterogenous
nature of the Ann Arbor com-
munity. Gelman, for example,
has a mailing list that goes
beyond the original list of
United Jewish Appeal con-
tributors. "I've especially
been interested in reaching
the untouched, the unaf-
filiated," says Gelman.
"The community has
grown; it's not as fragmented
and there's more of an
awareness of each other," she
says. "I'm interested in get-
ting people to communicate
with one another and realize
that we're all one communi-
ty."
Some readers, Gelman ad-
mits, have not been happy
with the changes. There was
criticism this year stemming
from two articles, one written
by Judith Elkin on behalf of
the UJA and the other by the
Ethical Giving Project of the
New Jewish Agenda which
suggested alternatives to the
UJA. The fallout littered the

pages of the WJN for four
months.
At the same time, there was
discussion by the United
Jewish Appeal/Jewish Com-
munity Association board
about what relationship, if
any, the UJA should have
with the paper. Some UJA
members believed that the
WJN was not printing some
material submitted by the
UJA. The UJA has an ar-
rangement to reserve a set
amount of space for paid
advertisements every issue.
At present, the UJA spends
approximately $200 a month
on such advertising. It is also
given space for UJA/JCA
news.

Gelman credits the paper's
success to the work of many
others. "Claire (Bernstein)
did an amazing job," Gelman
says about her predecessor
who was instrumental in
developing circulation and
advertising bases.
The use of volunteers con-
tinues. "We have about 30
volunteers right now. It's an
important part of the paper
and a way of getting people of
different ages and back-
grounds involved."

Orthodox Rabbis Ban
Biblical Scholar's Books

Jerusalem (JTA) — One of
Israel's best known and best
loved rabbis, Adin Steinsaltz,
has become the center of a
medieval-type heresy con-
troversy here as some Or-
thodox rabbis have publicly
banned all of his books.
Among the leaders is the
venerable Rabbi Eliezer
Schach of Bnei Brak, leader
of the mitnaged ultra-
Orthodoxy in Israel.
Steinsaltz himself has
issued a statement promising
to amend certain specific
passages in some of his books,
which have offended some
people in Orthodox circles.
But Schach and his
followers insisted in their
bans that all of Steinsaltz's
books must be shunned
"regardless of what he says or
replies."
Many observers link the
controversy to Schach's
relentless battle against
Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidim,
to which the scholarly and
prolific Steinsaltz adheres.
In fact, there have even
been rumors recently in Or-
thodox circles that Steinsaltz
might be considered as a
possible successor to the

childless, 87-year-old Lubavit-
cher Rebbe, Menachem
Mendel Schneerson.
The passages which ap-
parently aroused offense in
some Orthodox circles occur
in Steinsaltz's Dmuyot
Bamikra or Personalities in
the Bible, and its companion
volume Nashim Bamikra or
Women in the Bible. These
works include psychological
studies of some Biblical
figures.
But Schach and other Bnei
Brak rabbis, in their public
bans, insist that all Stein-
saltz's works are to be con-
sidered heretical.
The Beth Din (religious
court) of Jerusalem's ultra-
Orthodox Eda Haredit com-
munity, however, took a less
extreme position, singling out
only the two Bible studies for
criticism.
Steinsaltz, for his part, in a
statement in last Monday's
Hamodia, the organ of the
Agudat Yisrael party, under-
took to abide by that Beth
Din's opinion. He offered to
return the purchase price of
these books to any
dissatisfied reader, and to
amend future editions.
