Honors An Old Friend

ack in the 1950s,
at Omena Inn, Joe
Cornell met Helen
Rosenberg . . . It was a rainy
Fourth of July and the social
director had not as yet arrived
from New York.
Joe took over, called a
square dance, and taught
Omena guests "Balling The
Jack" . . . Helen, who had had
some dance training in Cin-
cinnati, pitched in to help Joe
. . . and her standup comic
hubby, Tommy Rosenberg,
also did his bit.
The social director lasted
two days . . . Harold Landis,
whose family owned Omena
Inn, had Joe take over.
It was the beginning of a
great friendship between Joe
and Helen . . . She went to
work at the desk of Joe's first
studio next to Mumford High
on Wyoming . . . Near
neighbors Leo Knight, Al
Rosenberg, Sam Field and
this writer . . . She was with
Joe 21 years until her
passing.
He now lives in California
. . . and was in town recently
to make plans for the upcom-
ing "Dancing Through The
Decades" Joe Cornell reunion
to benefit the Helen Rosen-
berg Cancer Fighters, City of
Hope, Sept. 10 at Novi Hilton
on Haggerty and Eight Mile.
The reunion put on by the
Helen Rosenberg Cancer
Fighters will be for everyone
whose life has been touched
by Joe Cornell . . . dance
lessons, at his studio, bar or
bat mitzvahs, summer places
where Joe was social director,
etc. . . . plus of course open to
the general public . . . even
those who don't know Joe.

NANCI GOLDSMITH,

23-year-old daughter of Suzie
and Rick Goldsmith, and
granddaughter of Bertha and
Julius Allen, has been
selected for membership by
Outstanding College
Students of America . . . She
graduated from Stanford
University and is currently
taking her masters in public
relations at University of
Denver.
CONGRATS . . . to Sara
and rIbd Isaacs . . . on their
65th anniversary — . They'll
be honored tomorrow by Rab-
bi Irwin Groner during Shab-
bat services at Congregation
Shaarey Zedek.
NEVER TOOK a lesson,
but Lynne Schmidt, Howard's
wife, and daughter of Bever-
ly and Jerry Rosenthal, was

recent runner-up in the
Junior/Senior Dearborn Thn-
nis Tournament . . . On way
to runner-up spot, one of the
two opponents she beat was
tennis coach/winner of many
tourneys.
Wasn't Lynn's first trophy
. . . She and Beverly took
Women's Doubles first place
in Oak Park Thnnis Tourna-
ment this summer.
Lynn is secretary to Judge
Stephen Cooper of South-
field's 46th District Court.
CONGRATS to Vicki and
Ray Goldbaum . . . on their
30th anniversary.

WHILE LOU GOLDEN

was in hospital, he tells, sit-
ting with him were two nuns
from different orders and two
rabbis from different con-
gregations . . . Doctor came in
and said he wanted to talk to
him, so visitors walked out
. . . The doctor told Lou he
was doing remarkably well
and asked to what he at-
tributed it . . . Lou said, "See
those people who walked out?
I owe them all pledges.
They're making sure I live!"
