When I look back at "What my
depression did to my kids, it hurts. The
sleeplessness, the ranting and raving, the
thoughts of suicide — I remember more
than one instance when my boys pounded
on the bathroom door begging to know
what I was doing. The whole family
revolved around my depression — they
never knew what I'd do next. Not until I
finally got professional help could I
attempt to be a mother again.

If your husband or wife is suffering
from depression, helping them will help
the whole family. Don't wait. Make the
call. Do it now. Depression can be treated.

New York (JTA)
Mis-
sionary activity and cults are
on the rise worldwide and
particularly in Israel, accor-
ding to a study by Israel's In-
terior Ministry.
The study, according to the
Task Force on Missionaries
and Cults, a project of the
Jewish Community Relations
Council of New York,
estimates the number of mis-
sionary operations directed at
Israel at over 190. In addition,
approximately 3,000 to 5,000
Israelis have become born-
again Christians.
The study attributes the re-
cent acceleration of such ac-
tivities to the approaching se-
cond millennium, the year
2000, which many
-evangelical Christians
believe will mark the second
coming of the Messiah.
The Missionaries — Cults
Task Force has pinpointed 12
missionary operations and
five cults, many of them
American-based, that are ac-
tive in Israel:
• Messianic Synagogues.
Forty exist in Israel and pose
as synagogues with "mes-
sianic rabbis," Jewish stars
and Torah scrolls, in an at-
tempt to present a Christian
experience in a congrega
tional setting with a Jewish
flavor.
• Project Kibbutz. Based in
Tulsa, Okla., the program
sent 180 volunteers to serve
on kibbutzim when kibbutz
men left to serve in the army.
Although their missionary in-

tent was eventually exposed,
which lead to their expulsion
from the kibbutz movement,
continued_missionary infiltra-
tion into the kibbutz move-
ment has been reported. -
• Mormon Center. The Mor-
mons, whose theology re-
quires bringing Jewish people
into their fold, have built a
$30 million center in
Jerusalem and have publish-
ed a special training manual
411
on how to convert the Jewish
people.
• Caspari Center. A San
Francisco-based Jews for
Jesus enterprise, the Center
runs seminars and courses
that train missionaries how
to reach out more effectively
to Israeli Jews.
• The Rock of Israel. The
California-based ministry
raises funds for and supports
Israelis who are involved with
proselytizing in the Holy
Land.
• Scientology. A cult found-
ed by the late American
science fiction writer L. Ron
Hubbard is the largest and
most active in Israel, with
membership of approximate-
ly
one-fifth
of
the
schoolteachers in Beersheba.
• EST. One of America's
mass therapy cults, the group
has been operating in Israel
under the pseudonym, . "The
Center."
• Transcendental Medita-
tion. The Jewish Agency
recently allowed this group to
41 1
use an old Nachal base to
build a settlement in Judea.

Israel Wants Sign
That Soldiers Are Alive

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel is
demanding proof that its
missing soldiers in Lebanon
are alive before it engages in
negotiations for their release.
Indirect negotiations with
the Islamic fundamentalist
Hezbollah, or Party of God,
would likely take place with
the help of the Geneva-based
International Committee of
the Red Cross, Defense
Minister Yitzhak Rabin told
the Labor Party Central Com-
mittee last week.
"As long as we don't know
who is alive and who isn't, we
will discuss no other details,"
he stressed. "When the Red
Cross comes to us — and it
will do so only when it has a
partner for negotiations — we
will first demand a sign of life
from those to be exchanged by
the other side."

In Geneva, Red Cross
spokeswoman Marjorie Mar-
tin told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency, "We are
not involved in any contacts
concerning the hostages, and
the ICRC has not organized a
special group to deal with this
issue."
Hezbollah has issued a
statement saying that the
group is holding two Israeli
soldiers, but that the abduc-
tion of Sheik Abdul Karim
Obeid had made their release
impossible.
The defense minister said
some time ago that Israel
would not participate in any
negotiations unless it was
certain that the Israeli
prisoners were indeed alive
and that Israel was not being
misled by their captors.
