United States spends $300
billion annually on defense,
including billions on in-
telligence gathering, but still
does not know much about
the terrorists holding
American hostages.
"It is pretty tough," he said,
"to go back [home] and to
justify to the American public
time after time the statement
that these terrorists are just
a dark shadowy group," he
added.
In capturing Sheik Obeid,
he said, Israel "did exactly
what it should have done in
taking preemptive action
against terrorists. If a nation
or group sponsors terrorism,
if they are promoting ter-
rorism, then they should be at
risk. And it is about time that
the United States began to do
more than spout rhetoric and
pay lip service. We keep say-
ing that we are going to de-
fend ourselves and our people,
but we have been doing a
pretty poor job up until now."
On the whole, much of the
American public is certainly
inclined to give Israel the
benefit of the doubt right now.
This has come through in re-
cent days, especially in
several influential newspaper
editorials and commentaries.
For example, Royko, in an
extraordinarily pro-Israeli
column entitled "Come on,
Arabs, Israel's a runt," prais-
ed Israel for routinely
defeating the Arabs. "The day
after Israel was first
established as a state, the
Arabs invaded. They expected
little trouble overrunning so
few victims, only 800,000 at
the time.
"Instead, Israel beat them
back, making the Arabs look
like some of the most in-
competent warriors in
history.
"Looking back," Royko add-
ed, "the Arabs would have
been wise to let Israel alone-
- to let them irrigate, turn
arid land into something
green, make greasy chicken
soup and start some small in-
dustries. Who knows, if the
Arabs hadn't been so warlike,
Israel could have turned its
energies to peaceful pursuits.
And today, instead of wat-
ching a -Sony, we might be
looking at a 36-inch
Goldberg."
"Now," Royko concluded,
"the Arabs are irate."
