the costs of labor, services and
raw materials.
Ami Federman, head of the
Dan chain of hotels, insisted
that price controls "will not
bring a single additional
tourist to Israel?'
According to Federman,
tourism is down because of
the Palestinian uprising. On-
ly a vigorous marketing cam-
paign abroad can help,
something this ministry has
not undertaken, the hotelier
complained.
But the ministry's cam-
paign has won press and
public support, especially
after it was widely reported
that a hamburger cost $8.67
at the King David Hotel in
Jerusalem.
That price was defended by
Federman, whose chain owns
the famous hotel built more
than 60 years ago and still
regarded by many as the
finest hotel in Israel. He ex-
plained that the King David
burger is no ordinary ham-
burger, but rather made from
steak filets.
The new price set by the
rIburism Ministry, for bed and
breakfast at the King David
and other five-star hotels, is
$173 per night. It is $153 at
four-star hotels and $102 at
three-star establishments.
