editorial still has merit. It
provided this advance
analysis of the situaiton:
Terrorists and states
sponsoring terrorism, like
Iran, Libya and Syria, can
only be emboldened by ir-
resolution. They can also
take comfort from remarks
like those of Senator Dole
attacking Israel for "free-
lancing, apparently in the
interest of gaining leverage
to win the release of some
of its citizens held hostage'
Marlin Fitzwater, the White
House spokesman, seemed
to endorse this thought
when he said, "It's fair to
say that many people do
share the Senator's con-
cerns."
What exactly were Mr.
Dole and Mr. Fitzwater
criticizing? Was it the cap-
ture of terrorists? Presi-
dent Reagan did not have
any qualms about doing so.
Was it rather Israel's
failure to coordinate its
capture of Sheik Abdul
Karim Obeid last week?
That's worth discussing, as
is the thinking behind
Israel's commando raid.
But these points hardly
merit the Dole broadside.
Misunderstandings often
lead to distortion of facts. En-
couraging knsowledge of
developing conditions is a
necessity assuring under-
standing that sympsoiums
like the Bar-Ilan-assembled
are of vital importance. If
they can be encouraged much
can be accomplished com-
municatively and jour-
nalistically. ❑

counts for relate to events
that had become interna-
tionally significant.
The relationship with John
F. Kennedy during the lat-
ter's entire political career is
a guideline to devotions with
special Jewish interests.
Weinstein was the President's
adviser in matters of special
concern to Jews. He introduc-
ed the leading Jewish per-
sonalities of that era to Ken-
nedy and he was truly the
President's adviser in matters
relating to social-political-
human causes as well as
those of particular concern
with Zionism and Israel.
Autobiography is, of course,
first-person writing. There-
fore, the endless I's are a
necessity to link the
biographer with the multi-
tude of peoples involved and
the endless world occurrences
described. Lewis Weinstein

accomplishes his tasks with
great skill.
This massively accumu-
lated historiography is regret-
tably only briefly annotated
in this review. Not to be ig-
nored is Weinstein's dedica-
tion to family.
This is especially evidenced
in the affections for his wife
Selma and his concern when
she began to lose her memory.
When she succumbed to the
Alzheimer illness, he was the
constant attendant to her
needs with concern for all
who suffered from the
memory collapse.
He became locally and na-
tionally interested in the
cause and was a co-organizer
of movements to seek a cure
for Alzheimer's. ❑
