PHYSICIANS AND
OTHER HEALTH SERVICES PROFESSIONALS

The Metro Detroit Israel Bonds Professional Health Services Division

presents

At first, the Arab owners of
the stand tried to be clever
and ignore the orders. But
after seeing one too many
other Arab businesses
become the victim of
mysteriously set fires, they
closed the stand.
This week it was open
again, at 6 in the evening —
an open challenge to a
Palestinian nationalist with a
can of gasoline and a book of
matches.
The vendor said that he had
"sort of received permission
to reopen, but was not eager
to discuss details.
The reopening of the felafel
stand is symbolic of other
changes taking place in the
20-month-old Palestinian
uprising. The intifada may
not yet have died out, but its
leaders' hold on the rank and
file is showing definite signs
of weakening.
Besides the felafel stand,
shops, especially in remote
villages, are beginning to stay
open after noon, in defiance of
the partial commercial strike
in the territories and east
Jerusalem.
Two factors seemed to have
brought about this change:
the sharp drop in the stan-
dard of living caused by the
frequent strikes, and the fact
that more and more Jewish
employers are seeking to
replace their Arab workers
with Jews, even if they have
to pay more.
Daoud Kuttab, a Palesti-
nian journalist, said the in-
tifada has reached a state in
which people are more in-
terested in political
developments than in
violence.

Convent Angers
Polish Jews

1: 3

New York (JTA) — The
Federation of Polish Jews of
the United States is urging
that Jewish participation in
Polish ceremonies com-
memorating the 50th an-
niversary of the outbreak of
World War II be canceled
because of the failure by the
Catholic Church and the
Polish government to remove
the Carmelite convent from
the site of the former
Auschwitz death c:37np.
Moreover, the organization
is calling upon Jews to sus-
pend trips to Poland until the
nuns leave the convent.
Ceremonies are scheduled
to take place in Poland Aug.
30 to Sept. 4, to recall the
Sept. 1, 1939, i.:wasion of
Poland by the Na7:1s.
