The Leather Store
With a Difference
mon history of oppression and
a shared obligation to assist
the less fortunate.
It is this collective sense of
struggle that has been badly
eroded in recent years by a
variety of factors — including
the rise of Jesse Jackson, the
anti-Semitism of Louis Far-
rakhan, the small but strik-
ing growth of Jewish conser-
vatism, the struggle over of
action.
In many ways, blacks and
Jews have become more
isolated in American society
in the past decade. So the
decay of this natural alliance
is deeply disturbing to many
Jewish activists.
Mickey Leland's life
challenged the notion that
this estrangement is an in-
evitable result of growing
competition among ethnic
groups for a fair share of a
shrinking economic pie.
So Leland was able to
organize summer kibbutz pro-
grams for ghetto kids in
Houston — and still retain his
credibility with the black
community. He was able to
work for black-Jewish
dialogue at a time when stri-
dent elements within his own
community edged toward
anti-Semitism — and when
some Jews were edging
toward a racism that defies
the long tradition of
liberalism within the Jewish
community.
Other black congressmen
have supported Israel over the
years and worked effectively
with Jewish organizations on
issues of mutual concern. In-
deed, there is abundant
evidence that the black-
Jewish coalition remains
strong on Capitol Hill, at
least as far as practical
politics are concerned.
But nobody in Congress has
so consistently gone out on a
limb for Jewish causes as
Mickey Leland.
Finally, Leland personified
the kind of personal activism
that has traditionally been
dear to the Jewish communi-
ty, a fact that was
demonstrated by the cir-
cumstances of his death dur-
ing a multi-faceted mission to
one of the poorest and most
ravaged nations in the world.
Hence the very real grief
that washed through this nor-
mally hard-hearted town in
the past few days. Leland's
death means the death of a
friend and an ally — but even
more than that, of a symbol of
shared activism, of an
alliance that all too often
seems hopelessly fractured. ❑
