ith the recent
Israeli revival of
an ancient minor
holiday, a Tu B'Av bride is
becoming as common in
Israel as a June bride in the
States.
Tu B'Av, the 15th of Av, was
once a joyous, popular festival
as far back as the Second
Temple period. The holiday
marked the beginning of the
vintage and it was a day of
wood offering when all the
people brought kindling for
the Temple. It was also a day
when the tribes were allowed
to intermarry.
According to the Mishnah,
on this day the daughters of
Jerusalem dressed in white
raiments which they borrow-
ed "that none should be
ashamed which had them
not" ("Ta 'An" 4:8, T B, Ibid.
31 a) and went forth to dance
in the vineyards chanting
songs.
"The young girls danced in
the vineyards all dressed in
white to make no differentia-
tion between rich and poor,"
said Gala Gazit of Ramat
HaSharon. "The boys would
choose a mate and go to the
`old man' of the village and
ask permission to marry.
"Now the holiday has been
revived by the kibbutzniks,
and many people want to get
married on that day, especial-
ly since it is right after Tisha
B'Av, and no marriages are
permitted for the three weeks
prior to that holiday."
In fact, the day is so popular
for marriages in Israel that
couples sometimes have to opt
for a second choice because
they cannot find an available
caterer.
This "new" holiday reflects
a changes in the Jewish calen-

dar brought about since the
creation of the State of Israel.
"If you asked my zayde what
is the saddest day of the year,
he would have said `Tisha
B'Av, " said Dr. Daniel Levine
of Bar Ilan University. "But
if you go to my son, Raffi, and
ask the same question, he
would say, undoubtedly, Yom
HaZikaron, memorial day for
the fallen soldiers."
"Now, if you asked my zayde
what was the happiest day of
the year, he would have said
Simhat Ibrah, or Shavuot or

flag. We are moving. We are
even beginning our own
Valentine's Day, Tu B'Av, and
for the past three or four
years, I have been going to
these Tu B'Av parties," he
said. "We are trying to rekin-
dle the spirit through these
