Ethiopian version of Judaism,
they also would have to accept
Reform and Conservative
Judaism."
Because of the near her-
metic isolation of their com-
munity, Ethiopian Jews
lacked the Talmud and the
traditions that make up rab-
binic Judaism. Many of their
customs approximate Jewish
practice during Second Tem-
ple times, according to Ben-
Dor.
lb the Ethiopians, religion
and community are tightly
interwoven. "An Ethiopian
separated from his communi-
ty has a difficult time remain-
ing Jewish," Ben-Dor said.
Celebrations and festivals
revolve around the communi-
ty, rather than the family.
This is because prayer and
ritual are conducted in Ge'ez,
an ancient Ethiopian lan-
guage few understand today.
Moreover, because of the com-
munity's extreme poverty, few
were allowed the luxury of a
religious education.
So-the community relied on
a cadre of priests — they had
no rabbis in Ethiopia "— to
chant the prayers and make
the priestly animal sacrifices,
while the congregation
looked on.
Ben-Dor said the communi-
ty was traumatized by their
trek to Israel, by the loss of
those who did not survive the
journey, and by the pain of
separation from those who re-
main in Ethiopia. The conver-
sion issue added to the
trauma.
While most Ethiopians
have reached a modus viven-
di with Israeli society and
rabbinic Judaism, and Israeli
schools have made an effort to
teach young Ethiopians about
their heritage, some of the
olim have been totally
alienated.
"There are four priests and
their faithful who have made -
it clear that they won't accept
rabbinic anything," Ben-Dor
said. 0

Israel Lifts
Censorship Law

Aviv (JTA) — A 60-year-
old law subjecting plays and
stage performances to censor-
ship was to be lifted this
week, for a two-year trial
period.
Israeli bohemians planned
to mark the occasion by
gathering at the Tzavta
theater club here for the stag-
ing and reading of excerpts of
plays that have been banned
under<the censorship regula-
tions, which were first impos-
ed under the British.
The last film- to be com-
pletely censored was The Last
