Goldstein attended Oak Park schools until the ninth grade and then went to Berkley High School. He graduated from Berkley in 1970. During his high school years, he was active in United Synagogue Youth. When he entered the University of Michigan, he decided to take Hebrew, which he found stimulating. "I met a group of people committed to Zionism," he said. His interest in Judaism and Hebrew motivated him to spend his junior year of college studying at Hebrew University. He became fluent in Hebrew and traveled throughout Israel. After graduating college in 1970, he decided to move to Israel and lived there for six years. He studied vocational rehabilitation on the graduate level at Bar-Ilan University. In 1975-76 he served in the Israel Defense Forces in a combat unit that luckily did not see combat. "You learn you are capable of far more than you thought," said Goldstein about his experience in the Israeli army. While in Israel, he met his future wife Dora. Since she was from Morroco and spoke French, they communicated in Hebrew. "Eliezer Ben-Yehuda (the father of modern Hebrew) would have been very proud," said Goldstein. In 1976 he moved back to Detroit becoming Michigan director of B'nai B'rith Foundation in 1977. He worked there for two years before becoming Midwest director at Bar-Ilan, where he is now completing his 10th year. "The Detroit community has been the number one supporter of Bar-Ilan University since before its inception. The first dollar was raised at the home of the late Abe and Laura Nusbaum in 1952."
