I TEENS I Simons Sez NCSY Plans Events, Attends Ohio Seminar • ▪ ▪ The Detroit 'chapter of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth will begin its programming year by at- tending the Central East Regional NCSY Leadership Training Seminar in Colum- bus, Ohio, Aug. 21-23. The LTS program is open to all 9th-12th graderss interested in developing leadership skills. Teen leaders from throughout Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana and Penn- sylvania will attend. Among topics to be discussed are organizing a program, how to plan an overnight, fund- raising, group dynamics and educational programs. The program also provides oppor- tunities for participants to en- joy a variety of social ac- tivities including miniature golf, roller skating, sports and swimming. On Sept. 3, NCSY will spon- sor a bike-a-thon to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The bike-a-thon, called Bike 4 Life, will be held 10 a.m. at Kensington Metro- park. The program is open to all members of the communi- ty. Prizes will be given to those raising the most amounts of money. Kosher food will be available. For the first time, the Detroit Chapter of NCSY will distribute Rosh Hashanah baskets. For the cost of a card and stamp, members of the community can send New Year's greetings to friends and relatives in the form of a gift package. Included in the basket will be a bottle of wine, a jar of honey, apples, figs, dates, an NCSY bencher and a tashlich card. A specially made Rosh Hashanah card featuring the names of all those _sending New Year's - greetings also will be includ- ed. Proceeds from this pro- gram will benefit local NCSY programs; the NCSY Torah Fund, which provides scholar- ships to teenagers going to Shabbatonim, summer Israel programs or a year of study in Israel; and the Young Israel Bone Marrow Search Fund. The NCSY weekly Torah Study Class will meet 8 p.m. Monday at the Young Israel of Southfield. The class is open to all 9th-12th graders and is free. Classes are taught by Rabbi Marc Volk of Yeshivat Akiva. This week's topic is "The Laws of Shabbat." For information regarding these and other upcoming NCSY prograins, call. Honored at the event will be congregation members Fay and Charles Isackson, recipients-elect of the State of Israel's "Jerusalem Award." Dr. Korey is an interna- tional authority on Soviet Jewish affairs and global human rights. He is a graduate of the Rus- sian Institute at Columbia University where he earned advanced degrees in history and international relations. Dr. Korey was director of the Anti-Defamation League Illinois-Missouri regional of- fice and later of its DC- Maryland office.
