Herb Silver, "The Saint of Paint" FREE Pick Up & Delivery
athletics, but never great.
This is my chance."
Her workout is intense —
every day — comprising
aerobic and anaerobic exer-
cises like pull-ups, sit-ups,
step-ups, mild jogging and
riding a stationary bike. She
lifts weights three times a
week and teaches aerobics
five to six times a week.
Yet teaching aerobics, she
says, is not really part of her
training. For Wagner,
aerobics is a fun way to re-
main fit for life and to help
others live healthy lifestyles.
'You have to be
psyched. I'm self-
motivated, but it
does get
frustrating.'
"I love to lead the class,"
she says. "I like to see pro-
gress in the students."
When she first started
preparing for the competi-
tion, Wagner was teaching
elementary school full time in
Berkley. She trained at 5:30
a.m. each morning, taught all
day, led aerobics at night and
found a little free time to
spend with her husband.
"You have to be psyched,"
she explains: "I'm self-
motivated, but it does get
frustrating."
Until last month, Wagner
worked out independently.
Now she uses a personal
trainer.
To qualify for the competi-
tion, Wagner won a Detroit
cross-training contest last
summer and moved on to
compete in the Bahamas,
where she placed fifth overall
and made the cut for the
Soviet Union event.
To help pay expenses for
the Bahamas event, The
Workout Company sponsored
an aerobics fund-raiser.
Wagner learned of the in-
ternational contest when
sponsors from Heritage
Sports of Ohio approached the
aerobics studio, looking for
viable candidates.
The contest comprised a
wide variety of events, some
in which Wagner had never
excelled. But she took it as a
challenge.
After months of constant
preparations, Wagner says
she is ready to take on the
Soviet athletes.
When the contest is over,
Wagner plans to continue
aerobics and her teaching
career. Competition is not
part of her plans.
"I say no to more competi-
tions now," Wagner says.
"But I'll wait and see how I
do in Russia." Li
