With 28 pro tour wins, Alcott is two shy of automatic entry into the LPGA Hall of Fame. "That's a nice little carrot dangling over my head," she said. But "I don't give it a lot of thought. I know that that'll happen when I least expect it to happen. So I've just got to go out and give it my best." Alcott already is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame, and was elected Jewish Athlete of the Year in 1980. "That means a lot to me," she said. "I don't necessarily think about it too much. It happens to be a part of my life and it's an impor- tant part. But it doesn't have anything to do with how I play or anything like that." Being a top pro golfer, said Alcott, takes "a lot of hard work, total dedication. A lot of guts. That's the name of the game." But she still finds time for charitable activities. In 1986, for example, she won the Founder's Cup, which recognizes altruistic contribu- tions by an LPGA member. Alcott's own golf tourna- ment, with proceeds going to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, is in its 10th year. "It makes you feel good to be able to give of yourself and make other pe- ple's lives better and donate money to something that helps others," she said. Alcott also serves on the President's Council Against Drug Abuse. "It's a problem that's needed to be addressed for a long time," she said. "It's something that's very important in our society, to give the young people the right image of professional athletes. Unfortunately, in this day and age, I don't think there are that many athletes that do." ❑ Berk, Unger Join McLain Sportscasters Jim Berk of WKBD-TV and Mark Unger of WJZZ will join WXYT talk show host and former Detroit Tiger Denny 'McLain as celebrity golfers in the second annual Bill Donley Memorial Tournament Aug. 20 at Rochester Hills Golf and Country Club.
