You're only as good as your last miracle. We grew from 30 member families to over 450 member families in three months. And we're still growing. Some would call that a miracle. Some say our miracle happened because of our monthly family dinners and children's services...where the Rabbi takes time during the service itself to answer even the silliest question. Some say our miracle happened because we offer a bus service so that children can get to Hebrew School, because we understand that sometimes both parents have to work. Or because our Hebrew School is one day a week either Monday or Wednesday. Some say our miracle happened because we were the first congregation to publicly ask intermarrieds to become a part of our family. We wanted to make everyone feel at home, complete with support groups and programs, and sensitive planning with the blended family in mind. Because we want to make sure at Shir Shalom that there is no such thing as a second class citizen in Judaism. Some say the miracle happened because we started with nothing but an ideal and refused to settle for anything short of that ideal. We promised to create a synagogue responsive to the real needs of real people in today's world. Those needs could have been anything from starting Sunday School at 10 a.m. because we know that some people like to "sleep in" on Sundays—to creating specialized programs for the divorced, to teaching toddlers and their parents what the symbols of Judaism are and what they mean...on their level. Temple Shir Shalom is not an institution. It's an extended family built around a belief that synagogues can be spiritually centered, honest, warm, and feeling. We kept our promise to be exactly that...and maybe that's the real miracle in this day and age. Join us and become part of the miracle that is Temple Shir Shalom.
