sawing the air despite the
very torrent, tempest and
whirlwind of his passion.
"I believe he learned
Shakespeare," Tsafir says.
Since Begin's sudden retire-
ment in 1983, Tsafir has
largely dropped him from his
repertoire. Two politicians
still very much in vogue,
however, are Finance
Minister Shimon Peres and
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Rabin.
"Peres has something that
you can't find anywhere," he
says. "He doesn't blink. Some
say he doesn't blink because"
— and here Tsafir's voice
drops down to the stiff Peres
baritone — "if you have Yit-
zhak Rabin on one side and
Yitzhak Shamir on the other
side, you can't afford to blink
because someone might take
your job?'
Tsafir says Peres' eyes gave
him his reputation as a cun-
ning intriguer. "When he
says hello," Tsafir says, mov-
ing hand and upper body stiff-
ly, "the eyebrows go up but
the eyes are still open."

"Now I get it! Sharon never
grew up. He's still a boy. The
tics help me to remember to
take my voice up, almost like
a falsetto."

The key to Rabin is his slop-
py mouth, which in Tsafir's
impersonation always
threatens to slide off the
defense minister's face even
as Rabin continually jerks his
_chin up to keep his head from
tumbling off his neck. This
symphony of movement ac-
counts for Rabin's low voice
and his inexplicable habit of
emphasizing words that need
no emphasis.
When. Tsafir transforms
himself into Trade Minister
Ariel Sharon, he begins to
giggle sheepishly and his
nose starts to tic like a rab-
bit's. "So you talk a little bit
like a boy," Tsafir says, tick-

The Last Thing A Burglar Wants To See

Sharon: Never grew up.

Israelis laugh at themselves
for 15 years, say the common
belief that Israelis have no
sense of humor is untrue. The
realities of navigating the
first. Jewish state since the
Borsht Belt have merely
altered the traditional form of
Jewish humor.
"The involvement of the
Israeli in politics is maybe -the
highest in the world," says
Tsafir. "But he likes to laugh,
despite the pressures here. So
we mix laughs with satire.
The best way is to roll it in
sugar." El

Belly Dancing
Tests Orthodox

Rabin: Sloppy mouth.

Jerusalem (JTA) — An
Israeli belly dancer is
challenging the right of
Jerusalem's Orthodox
establishment to put her out
of business by threatening to
revoke the kosher certifica-
tion of any hotel that allows
her to perform.
Ilana Raskin wants to know
what her profession has to do
with kashrut.
So does the High Court of
Justice, which has given the
Jerusalem Religious Council
45 days to explain why revok-
ing kosher certification is
necessary.
One answer offered by the
attorney for the Religious
Council is that a mashgiach
(kashrut supervisor) could not
be in the hotel while the
"abomination" of belly danc-
ing was taking place.
