It will not, however, necessarily lead them to free the three Israeli servicemen (if indeed they are still alive) who were the primary reason for the Obeid kidnapping. At the same time, Jerusalem is highly unlikely to agree to terms that do not involve the release of its own servicemen, a position that carries within it the seeds of a future highly emotive con- flict with other Western capitals. How will Israe,i's Western allies, who have been critical of Israel's actions, react if they are offered only their own nationals in exchange for the hostages being held by Israel? That question goes to the heart of Israel's great gamble. Will Western leaders demonstrate an unflinching solidarity with Israel and re- ject anything less than a total amnesty for all hostages? Or will they succumb to domestic public pressure, detach themselves from Israel, be persuaded to strike a separate deal with Hezbollah and then demand Israeli concessions for the freedom of their own nationals? So far, the hostage crisis has produced more questions than answers. Israel has broken the impasse and it has undoubtedly started a pro- cess. Just where that process will ultimately lead, however, is yet another question. In a letter to the Vatican secretary for Jewish relations, Rabbi David Rosen of the ADL's Jerusalem office said anyone reading the pope's words "may fairly conclude from them that God's cove- nant with the Jewish people is superseded by the Chris- tian covenant as the only everlasting covenant." "I look forward to urgent clarification of the matter so that we may demonstrate to the world that the clock of Catholic-Jewish relations has not been tragically set back," Rosen said.
