Detroiters played an active
role in "turning people on to
Israel" during two national
family missions sponsored by
the United Jewish Appeal.
A local couple, Dr. David
and Susan Harold, were na-
tional chairman of the multi-
generational Mishpacha
Shelanu (Our Family) Mis-
sion in June.
Detroit boasted the largest
contingent with 38 out of a
total 118 grandparents,
parents and children. The
Harolds were accompanied by
their son Daniel and
daughters Stacy and Jessica.
Another Detroit couple, Dr.
Mark and Linee Diem, were
local chairman of a July fami-
ly mission, in which 18
Detroiters participated. The
Diems were accompanied by
their daughter Amy.
A highlight of both trips
was the symbolic bar/bat
mitzvah ceremony atop
Masada. Susan and Daniel
Harold were among the
Detroit participants in June.
Amy Diem took part in the
July ceremony.
The June group attended
the opening ceremonies of the
13th Maccabia Games.
Both missions visited
Yavneh, Detroit's Project
Renewal sister community, as
well as several UJA-supported
facilities to illustrate how
Detroit's Allied Jewish Cam-
paign dollars are used.
They also tubed down the
Jordan River, planted a tree
in the Kiryat Menachem
Forest, visited an ar-
cheological dig, rode a camel
and had dinner in a Bedouin
tent in the desert.
Linee Diem related the
story of one participant, an
older man, who said on the
last day: "I thought that by
osmosis my children would be
Jews, that with my love for

Judaism they also would
love." He found out that was
not enough.
The man brought his grand-
children on the July family
mission. "I see now that we
must travel to Israel as a
family," he said. "We must
share the tradition with our
children."
"Personally experiencing
Israel reinforces years of
education," said Dr. Diem. "It
shows our children that the
Jewish People, and customs,
are vibrant and exist outside
of textbooks."

scheduled for Aug. 13-23 and

Conventions

Jerusalem — Israel has
become a prominant venue
for international conventions
and congresses. According to
Avi Rosenthal, Israel
Ministry of Thurism's director
general, "The number of con-
ventions in Israel has increas-
ed by an average rate of 10
percent each year over the
last few years. We expect that
143 conventions will be held
in Israel during 1989."
The Israeli government is
spending $4.5 million this
year to expand the Binyanei
Haooma, Israel's national
cultural and convention
center in Jerusalem.
Binyanei Haooma can ac-
commodate up to 6,000 people
in a conference configuration
and annually hosts tens of
thousands of delegates and
hundreds of meetings.
While Jerusalem is the
primary meeting site, Israel
also boasts more than 120
