earned a full scholarship to
the National Music Camp
and a seat in its World Youth
Symphony Orchestra, which
appeared in a sell-out concert
with violin virtuoso Itzhak
Perlman.
Shlomit said the Perlman
concert was a great ex-
perience for her.
She said she did not realize
that so many American
children were unfamiliar
with her homeland. Since
she's been at camp, she's
answered innumerable ques-
tions about her lifestyle in
Jerusalem.
"I remember hearing
stories about Interlochen
from kids at my school that
had come here," Shlomit said.
When she returns home, she
says she will begin service in
the Israeli army. She would
like to perform chamber
music in the army's music
division.
Dana is the daughter of Il-
an and Cynthia Rubin and, as
an intermediate camper,
takes courses in drama,
modern dance, piano and in-
strument exploration.
The 12-year-old was not
aware that other Israeli
students would be at NMC.
"I was really surprised and
pleased to meet Shlomit and
Davida here. As a matter of
fact, Davida, who is also an
intermediate camper, lives in
Omel, whichis only two hours
away from my home in
Jeruslaem," she said.
Davida is the 13-year-old
daughter of Ted and Polly
Eisenberg. This is her fourth
summer at Interlochen as a
visual arts major.
"At first, I just couldn't
figure out why everyone was
asking us such strange ques-
tions about our homes," Dana
said. "They'd ask if we had
running water, or if we rode
camels to school. I thought
they were joking, but then I
began to udnerstand that
these were serious questions
about another culture, foreign
to them."
