he food didn't impress
him, but the coaching and
dedication of his Soviet men-
tors did, said an 11-year-old
Oak Park gymnast recently
returned from Leningrad.
Sean Stephenson was one of
13 North American boys — in-
cluding seven from Detroit —
and 65 girls who participated
in the June 23-July 7 camp at
the 1980 Olympics gym-
nastics site.

"The food was very bad, and
in some places, you couldn't
drink the water. Some of the
equipment was old and worn.
But I want to go back again
because I want to learn gym-
nastics," said Sean.
"Coaching makes the dif-
ference," said Sean, who is in
his second year of competitive
gymnastics. "The Soviet kids
drank alcohol and smoked.
The only reason they were
good was their coaching and
how hard they worked."
Young Stephenson, who
was making his first trip to a
foreign country other than
Canada, tied for first in Class
4 of the U.S. Gymnastics
Federation's Michigan state
meet last year and was eighth
in Class 3 this year.
The young gymnasts train-
ed six hours daily with their
Russian and American men-
tors, then toured such Soviet
sites as the home of Peter the
Great. But Stephenson said
the youngsters weren't given
opportunities to make friends
with their Soviet counter-
parts.
