Josh Chinitz, left, and Merrek Sakwa run the 3,000-meter.

he explained. "But we'll ad-
just for that. I'm sure my in-
fielders can play outfield.
"There's no single superstar
who's going to dominate. But
I've got a lot of pretty good
ballplayers. I'm not weak at
any position, except maybe
pitcher. We'll adjust for that."
The team has practiced
regularly and will have a
father-son game a week
before the Regional.
Spokajny's team is loaded
with 14-and-15-year-olds. It
seems to lack power, so will
try to make up for that with
aggressive base-running.
"We're going to try to do what
we did the last couple years,"
— stretch for extra basis, the
coach said.
Leadoff man Phil Siegle is
the "speed demon" of the
team, said Spokajny. Getting
him on base will be a key to
the offense. "He'll steal a lot
of bases," the coach predicted.
The soccer team has its
usual strength — through the
middle. Unfortunately, it also
has its question-marks at the
front and back — it lacks a
good forward and a goalie, ac-
cording to Coach Attar.
Attar isn't criticizing this
year's goalkeeper, Danny
Newman. It's just he has not
seen Newman play a game.
A strong performance from
Newman can help solve the
team's other problem. If
Newman plays well, said At-
ta•, "then I will be able to
pick someone from the
defense and put him up at the
forward."
The squad is strong at
defense and midfield. The
heart of the team is a trio of
14-year-old defenders:
Howard Larky, Ben Pinsky
and Andrew Horowitz. "They
are big; they're very strong
and they can take care of
anything on defense," said
Attar.
Attar's team took the gold

in the three-team Cleveland
competition. They were
quarterfinalists last year.
"Any team that will play
against us (in Pittsburgh) will
have a hard time, because I've
got a very good midfield and
defense," the coach said.
Track coach Kashdan will
have more competitors than
he did in Chicago. One
holdover is Merrek Sakwa, a
bronze medalist last year in
the 3,000-meter run.
"We don't have any
superstars on our team,"
Kashdan said. "We have a
couple kids who are real good
for their age," including
Sakwa, Sara Kolodin and
Jayson Klotz, Ryan Kaluzny,
Mark Harwin and Jeanette
Rubenstein.
The track meet at Pitt-
sburgh will take place in one
day, with two age groups,
12-14 and 15-16.
Track athletes can enter
other sports as well. Klotz
will play soccer while Steven
Baer will play tennis.
The basketball team has
lost its big scorer Matt Hoff-
man, who's over-age, but has
gained a big man — literally.
He's 6-foot-7 Vaugn Swartz,
from Ann Arbor Huron High
School, who played for Ann
Arbor in Chicago last year.
The probable starters are
least 6-feet tall, with Swartz
at center: John Rosenbaum
(6-2) and Adam Shapiro (6-1),
at forward and Joey Hurshe
(6-1) and Jeff Rosenberg (6-0),
at guard.
"We've got the size this
year," said coach Hurshe.
"We're not quite as quick as
we've been in the past." Scott
Zack, 6-5, will back up
Swartz.
Hurshe, assisted by Doug
Hoffman, will run a lot of
half-court offense. "We've got
some good shooters. When
we're in the half-court, we can
go into Vaugn and something
