Ellen Labes.
"We try to match children-

to-children families, or by pro-
fessions," said Karen Keidan
Myerson, committee chair-
man in charge of matching.
"But they (the American
families) have to be people-
oriented. They have to be
`people-people,' not doing this
as a lark." She said a total of
100 families — about 350
newcomers — are expected in
Detroit by next June.
"The American families
have to be committed. There's

But when the federal funds
run out and the newcomers
still don't have jobs, which
can be the case — when the
realities of life set in, that's
when the American families
are really going to be need-
ed," Myerson said.
"At first, they (the Soviets)
are in a childlike state. Then,

when the realities start set-
ting in, they become quiet,
withdrawn. Family contact
encourages them to practice
English."
Myerson said some Soviet
families who've been in
Detroit a while are helping,
too.

it's a wonderful
beginning for them
